The Junior League of Erie is planning an awareness week from May 13 through the 17. On Saturday May 17, Gannon University will host a "play and learn" day for parents who wish to learn more about Flat Head Syndrome and how to prevent it. The event will be held at the Palumbo Center, 824 Peach Street. Medical professionals with be available to offer free screenings and answer questions. Admission and workshops are FREE and open to the public. Flat Head Syndrome is a commonly used term to refer to several different medical conditions where there is flattening to a part of an infant's head, caused by the infant frequently having pressure on his head in the same position. The incidence of Flat Head Syndrome has increased significantly in recent years, with an estimated 1 in 20 infants now affected. In 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics launched the "Back to Sleep" Campaign. This campaign has proven to be highly successful in saving infants' lives. However, this campaign, combined with the proliferation of convenient equipment such as infant car carriers has resulted in infants spending more time on their backs than ever before. Parents and caregivers need to be educated on both preventing and recognizing Flat Head Syndrome. Some early signs of Flat Head Syndrome are: head turned in one direction most of the time, flat spot on the back or one side of the head, bulging on one side of the head, one ear more forward than the other, asymmetry of the face and head tilted to one side most of the time. The Gannon University Bookstore was one of more than 280 college and university bookstores nationally to take part in the recently concluded "Buy a Book, Build a Forest" campaign. The goal of the campaign was to plant 100,000 trees in a national forest. Students at participating schools were asked to go online, to BuildaForest.com, and vote where they felt the forest should be planted. The school with the most votes, as a percentage of enrollment, would have the school's name associated with the forest. During the 2007-08 school year, students from across the country participated in the competition by donating a portion of each used textbook purchased or sold at their bookstore to The Arbor Day Foundation. The proceeds from this nationwide recycling competition will be used to plant trees in the student-selected Pike and San Isabel National Forest, located in central/southeast Colorado. Used textbooks offer advantages for the environment and help keep textbooks affordable for college students, according to Anthony Marchewka, manager of the Gannon Bookstore. "Rising textbook prices are a concern for every college student," he said. "One way to help keep book prices lower is to offer a strong supply of used textbooks. On average, used books offer a savings of up to 25 percent. "The 'Buy a Book, Build a Forest' campaign has helped us communicate with faculty the importance of re-using textbooks, both from an environmental perspective as well as a financial benefit to students. It has also encouraged students to sell back their textbooks at the end of the term and make more used textbooks available for the next term," he added. The campaign began in August and ran through March.

In a WSEE TV interview with John Kanzius of Erie (not yet posted on their site), Kanzius said that researchers led by Dr Steven Curley at the University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center have found a protein enzyme that will carry metallic nanoparticles exclusively to cancer cells. WSEE will run more of the interview in a 30 minute special. This is a monumental breakthrough. A paper announcing the discovery will be published in the next few months. Targeting cancer cells and attaching the nanoparticles to them was the necessary step for use of the Kanzius designed radio wave machine. High-powered radio waves are focused on cancer cells and destroy the cell membranes. Kanzius earlier explained that when the body is hit by the flu, a fever causes the flu cells to overheat and the membranes are destroyed. Radio waves act like the fever with cancer cells. The non-invasive cancer treatment is today much more of a reality than an idea. Human trials could now start by 2010. The John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation is actively seeking donations for research.

Erie Otters froward Justin Hodgman scored 23 seconds into the third overtime to lift the Fort Wayne Komets to a 3-2 win over the Port Huron Icehawks in Game 7 of the International Hockey League Finals played Monday night in Fort Wayne. Hodgman signed on to play for Fort Wayne as an amateur after the Otters season ended. He received no pay while playing for the professional team. Hodgman was named playoff MVP - the youngest player on the ice and the only one not being paid. The 19 year-old also finished as the top scorer in the IHL post season with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in 13 games. He will be back with the Otters next season if he's not playing in the NHL. He is draft eligible this year.

After the second day of the 2008 Thoroughbred meet at Presque Isle Downs and Casino, the track cut the signal to online and telephone wagering companies because of the lack of an agreement with the Pennsylvania Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. The signal was sent to some off shore facilities including the Elite Turf Club, and Racing and Gaming Services which have agreements with the association. Presque Isle Downs off track handle was over $729,000 on opening night and only $195,000 on Sunday. MTR Gaming president and CEO Ted Arneault refused to discuss the matter in a conference call with analysts discussing MTR Gaming first-quarter financial results.
MTR Gaming Group reported a first-quarter loss of $2.6 million, or 10 cents per share. The net loss compares to a profit of $559,000, or 2 cents per share, in the same period last year. It includes a $3.4 million hit for changing its main credit line and $400,000 in what the company called strategic development expenses. Revenues, however, were up for the period ending March 31, and MTR said half of it its loss - $1.4 million, or 5 cents per share - came from discontinued operations. Revenues for the quarter surged 26 percent, from $92 million to $116.3 million. Earnings before interest taxes, depreciation and amortization were up 24 percent, from $13.1 million to $16.2 million. MTR said both gains were largely due to the inclusion of Presque Isle Downs and Casino for the entire first quarter in 2008, compared to only 32 days in the first quarter of 2007. The numbers also reflect the addition of poker and other table games at West Virginia's Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in Chester.

Railpower Technologies Corp (TSX: P) reported quarterly results. For the quarter ended March 31, 2008, revenue decreased from $25.1 in the corresponding period last year to $3.3 million. Decreased revenue in the quarter resulted from the delivery of 3 locomotives and kits, compared to 24 locomotives and kits for the same period last year. The gross margin totaled ($0.7) million compared to ($1.3) million in the corresponding period in 2007. The improvement of the gross margin is mainly explained by the fact that sales in the quarter generated a positive profit margin, which was not the case in the past. Operating expenses for the quarter ended March 31, 2008 totaled $5.6 million compared to $7.2 million for the corresponding period in 2007. Net loss for the quarter ended March 31, 2008 was $7.6 million, or $0.08 per share compared to a net loss of $8.4 million, or $0.12 per share for the same period last year. This decrease in the loss is mainly explained by an improvement of the gross margin for an amount of $0.6 million and a reduction of the operating expenses of $1.6 million. However, these were partially offset by the interest expenses on the convertible debenture totaling $0.9 million, an increase of the warranty and other related expenses of $0.5 million in relation with the revision of the provision for the recall and the on-going improvements of the road switching locomotives fleet and an increase of the amortization in relation to the new leased locomotives in service since the second quarter of 2007. Railpower is headquartered in Brossard, Quebec. Its US office is located in Erie, Pennsylvania.

In 1986 security agents from South Africa's apartheid regime kidnapped 10 black teenagers from the Mamelodi suburb of Pretoria, near Johannesburg, injected them with a coma-inducing drug and locked them in a vehicle packed with explosives. All that remained was a few bones. The fate of the "Mamelodi 10" stands as a chilling symbol of apartheid-era abuses, and one that underlines the work of human rights investigators in South Africa, among them Mercyhurst College forensic anthropologist Dr Steven Symes. Symes traveled to Pretoria May 8 for 10 days at the request of Claudia Bisso of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (Equipo Argentino de Antropología Forense, EAAF) and Madeleine Fullard, head of the Missing Persons Task Team, which is investigating apartheid-era cases for the South African public prosecutor's office. Symes brings his expertise in burned bone trauma to the analysis of what investigators believe may be the remains of the Mamelodi 10 as well as other victims who were abducted, shot and killed, their bodies set afire at Post Chalmers, an abandoned police station in the Eastern Cape. For his part, Symes is analyzing the remains for evidence of trauma; the ultimate goal is to enable authorities to return the remains of the victims to their families for reburial.
