Erie County Council approved a $29.65 million bond issue. Included is $4 for improvements at Jerry Uht Park, $14 million for a public safety building, $3.7 million for the pre-release center, $1.8 million for work at the Erie County Courthouse and $3 million for for land acquisition for the Greater Erie Industrial Development Corporation (GEIDC).
A New York state police dive team found the Piper Arrow that crashed in Lake Erie on August 26. Two of the three aboard were recovered. Kevin Jesteadt, an Edinboro student, had arranged a flight over Niagara Fall to propose to his girlfriend, Lindsey Myers, an Edinboro grad. The pilot was their friend, James Regal.
The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners approved the purchase of a 53.75 acre parcel of land in Waterford Township, which is an indenture into State Game Land 109, from the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy for $9,400. The tract is predominately comprised of wetlands, which the Game Commission considers critical and unique wildlife habitat. Of the remaining land, about 13 acres are woodland and the remaining seven acres are reverting farmland. The western edge of the property borders State Route 97. SGL 109 currently contains 1,899 acres in Erie County.
Gannon University will welcome back hundreds of Gannon and Villa Maria College alumni during the school’s fifth annual Alumni Homecoming and Reunion Weekend. Four classes – 1955, ‘65, ‘80, and ‘95 – will be celebrating landmark reunions during the event, scheduled for October 7-9. A number of other alumni groups, including African American, Honors Program, Student Government Association, Heritage Society (graduates of 1954 or earlier), and Occupational Therapy, also will be celebrating reunions.
On Thursday, October 6, short story writer Darrell Spencer will speak at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, as part of the Creative Writers Speaker Series. He will read from his works in the Larry and Katherine Smith Chapel Worship Space at 6:00 pm. A preceding reception will begin at 4:30 pm in the Smith Chapel Living Room. Both the reception and the reading are free and open to the public.
Robert Vandall, well-known composer, pianist and lecturer, will be in residence on the Mercyhurst campus Friday, October 7. The day’s offerings will include workshops for composers (11 am) and piano teachers (2 pm), a 4 pm master class, and a 7:30 pm recital featuring local piano students playing his compositions. All events will take place in the Walker Recital Hall, located in the Audrey Hirt Academic Center, and are free and open to the public.
The art galleries of Allegheny College will present the annual Faculty and Alumni Exhibit from Tuesday, Oct 11 through Wednesday, Nov 2. A public reception will be held in the galleries on Tuesday, Oct 11 from 7:30 to 9 pm. The art galleries will be closed Oct 15-18 for Fall Break. The exhibit will feature a variety of art works including drawings, sculpture, prints, photographs, video art, computer art and documentation of public art projects.
The Erie Otters announced today that they have acquired defenseman Tyler McKinley from the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds in exchange for overage forward Andrew Shennan. The two teams also exchanged draft choices. The Otters received a third round choice in the 2006 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection and a seventh round choice in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection. The Greyhounds get a fourth round pick in the 2006 OHL Priority Selection.
The Gannon men’s water polo team overcame a halftime deficit with five third-quarter goals and swam past rival Mercyhurst 11-10 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) action before a packed house Tuesday evening at Gannon’s Carneval Athletic Pavilion. Paul Musille had 4 goals for Gannon and Andrew Schonhoff scored 4 for Mercyhurst.
