MTR Gaming (Nasdaq: MNTG) announced that the Special Committee of the Board of Directors established to consider the previously announced management-led acquisition proposal or alternatives has retained CIBC World Markets Corp. and Lazard Freres as its financial advisors to assist the Committee in its evaluation of the proposal, alternatives, and determination of what is in the best interests of MTR and its stockholders. MTR recently began building Presque Isle Downs, a thoroughbred racetrack with pari-mutuel wagering and a slot maching casino.

Erie PA native Lois Washburn is now working as a nurse in Greensboro, NC. A patient asked her if she used to ride elephants. Nope, the patient wasn’t having a reaction to the medication he was taking. She did use to ride elephants for Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the early 1970s. Washburn was also an aerialist with the show, peforming 4 stories off the ground as a trapeze artist.

Struck Down, a band from Erie PA, has signed with Indianola Records. Struck Down oringally formed in the spring of 2004. The band includes Jameson Jenkins on guitar, Adam Greenman on bass, Raymond Horton on drums and Gabriel Poland on vocals. Their debut CD, “Revolution” will be released on January 10th.

Though he grew up in Erie, Pa, Greg Garing always gravitated toward vintage American music rather than trendy pop. The show he calls ‘Music City Circus’ is a traveling concert featuring Garing and other artists with some rockabilly, bluegrass, swing, boogie-woogie and ragtime. Garing is currently living and performing in Nashville.

Jill Schensul is working with Best Friends Animal Society rescuing pets from Hurricane Katrina and reuniting them with their owners. She rented an RV and travelled from her New Jersey home to New Orleans and has reunited pets with their owners in Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania, including Erie. Schensul is an award-winning newspaper travel writer and editor at The Record in Bergen, NJ. Best Friends has rescued almost 3,000 animals and reunited 280 with their owners, while another 89 are working their way back to their owners.


Beaumont Technologies of Erie, PA, has named Silvey’s Plastic Consulting as its technical sales representative in the Pacific Northwest and east as far as Denver. Beaumont Technologies produces software and other tools for the plastic injection molding industry.

Take a break from the Christmas shopping and hubbub and enjoy a free holiday concert. The Gem City Concert Band, under the direction of Betty McKinney, will present a special Holiday Concert at St. John Parish Center, adjacent to St John Lutheran’s Church, 2216 Peach Street. The performance will be held on Tuesday, December 20th at 7:30 pm and will feature many holiday favorites and a Christmas carol sing-along. The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted.

Celebrate Wigilia, Erie’s only traditional Polish Christmas dinner on Wednesday December 21 at 6:30 pm at Porters in Erie’s Union Station, 123 West 14th Street. Reservation are required. Call 452-2787. Dinners are $15 per person. Cash bar.The traditional meatless dinner is complete with Oplatek, religious music, artifacts, and rare museum quality exhibits directly from Poland.

The Erie Youth Hockey Association 35th annual Christmas Invitational Tournament will be held December 27-29, 2005.

Mashea Williams (Erie Mercyhurst Prep) returned to the court for the Penn State Lady Lions women’s basketball team. She missed 3 games with a knee injury. Willimas scored 6 points in yesterdays 79-65 loss to Middle Tennessee State.
