Incumbent Republican state Representative John Evans will face a challenge in the May primary election from Erie County Council member Carol Loll for the 5th District seat. The district covers western Erie and northwestern Crawford County. Evans was one of those that voted for the legislative pay raise last July.

The new CD by Train, For Me It’s You, goes on sale Tuesday January 31. Erie area part-time resident Pat Monahan and the band will be all over the airwaves next week with appearances on Letterman, Howard Stern, the Today Show, WB Morning Show, CBS Saturday Morning, The View and the Pepsi Smash Concert Series on VH1.

They are now looking for lifeguards to work the beaches at Presque Isle State Park for the 2006 Summer season. Applicants must obtain lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR certificates before employment starts in May. Pay starts at $10.20 an hour. Apply in person at the Presque Isle State Park Office in the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, 301 Peninsula Drive Suite 1, Erie PA.


The 30th Anniversary of the King Cobra Open will be held today at the Avalon Hotel. King Cobra Karate is the host for the event which will bring over 1,000 people to Erie to compete in 172 divisions.

Dancer Sandy Silva and musician Charmaine LeBlanc will conclude their Erie Art Museum residency with a public performance Saturday, Jan 28 at 8 pm. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for members, and $6 for students/seniors. Sandy Silva draws from the traditions of Celtic step dance, Spanish Flamenco, American tap, Appalachian clogging and modern dance. For the third year in a row, the Mercyhurst Prep Crew Team will ‘Row for Humanity’, a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. The team, boosters, coaches and friends join in this highly physical and mentally challenging feat to row for a full hour on the ergometer, an indoor rowing machine. The 2006 event will take place Saturday, January 28, from 10 am to 3:30 pm at the Millcreek Mall.

Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider, with her 17-piece orchestra, will perform Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 8 pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. To order tickets, call the box office at (814) 824-3000.

The Highmark Quad Games Cross County Ski and Snowshoe Race has been postponed again due to lack of snow. The event was originally scheduled for Jan 8th, then pushed back to Jan 15, then Jan 22 and then Jan 29, now has been rescheduled for Feb 5. If there is still no snow by Feb 5 they will then try each successive Sunday. The final attempt will be Feb 26.

They’re coming to get you, Barbara! Greg Ropp who runs the Eerie Horror Film Festival announced some big news. George Romero will appear at the 2006 Eerie Horror Film. The horror film fest will be held Oct 4-8, 2006 at the Erie Playhouse in downtown Erie. Romero directed the 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead. His 2005 movie Land of the Dead grossed $45 million.

Tickets for the Mercyhurst/Gannon basketball doubleheader, scheduled for Saturday night, January 28, are sold out. The games can be seen on the Image Sports Network (Adelphia Channel 12, Time Warner Channel 20).

Mark O’Leary capped a third period comeback with a shorthanded goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation as the Guelph Storm beat the Erie Otters 3-2 in an Ontario Hockey League game played in front of 4,073 at the Guelph Sports and Entertainment Centre. Vince Scott and Sean O’Connor accounted for the Otters scoring. The Otters return home to the Tullio Arena Saturday night to face-off and lose against the Peterborough Petes.

Senior Mary Krakowski (Erie, Pa/McDowell) took second in the 50 free with a time of 24.81 to round out the top individual performances for Bucknell in a 141-102 victory over Delaware.

Lake Erie Speedway has teamed up with WICU 12 and Peccadillo’s Bar to host the a Daytona 500 Race Party on Sunday, February 19th beginning at 1:30 pm. LES drivers are scheduled to be in attendance with at least one race car. Lake Erie Speedway will also be offering an exclusive general admission season ticket valid for all events for only $150. The Lake Erie Speedway drivers will be arriving around 1:30 pm while the race starts at 2 pm.

The Gannon University women’s water polo team was ranked 10th in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 Poll.
