He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the US House, and was re-elected six times. Governor Ridge was twice elected Governor of Pennsylvania, serving from 1995 to 2001.
Baylor University has set inaugural activities to take place on Thursday and Friday, April 20-21 for the installation of Dr John M Lilley as the university’s 13th president. He took office on Jan. 1, returning to his alma mater from the University of Nevada, Reno, where he had served as president since July 2001. Dr Lilley previously served as head of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College from 1980-2001.
Frederick Niebauer, 56, has been named CFO of Kahiki Foods Inc. Niebauer received an MBA degree from the University of Dayton and his undergraduate degree from Gannon University in Erie, PA.
Mercyhurst College announced they have raised $3,285,343 in the first six months of the 2005-06 fiscal year. Mercyhurst and leaders from western Erie County hope to raise up to $1 million in gifts and commitments to fund the construction of an academic building on Route 20 at the site of the former Divine Word Seminary. The college expects top open that building by autumn 2007. It also plans to begin classes in west Erie County in September 2006 at a site yet to be determined.

The Erie Community Blood Bank continues to need donors and is enticing them with beautiful yellow 4-Life T-shirts that have the CBB logo and a design on the front & back. The shirts were left over from 2005’s 4-Life. Sizes range from small to 4X but the number of each size varies. The blood bank is open late until 7:30 to accommodate donors.
A mini-tour of America by one of Italy’s premier classical trios will include a stop in Erie for two Penn State Behrend performances. Trio Johannes will perform works by Brahms and Shastakovich at noon on Tuesday, Jan 31, for the Music at Noon free chamber music concert series in McGarvey Commons. They will also appear as part of the college’s Music at Night: The Logan Series on Wednesday, Feb 1. The performance will begin at 7 pm in the Reed Union Building’s McGarvey Commons. Tickets are required. Tickets for the Feb 1 performance are available for purchase at the door or in advance at the Reed Student Union Building main desk. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 for Behrend students and children under 16, and $40 for a family.

“Grease” will be performed in the Mercyhurst College D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst College Feb 10-11 at 7:30 pm and Feb 12 at 2:30 pm. Sophomore Caitlin Liebau (Erie, Pa / Seneca), is competing for Robert Morris University in Track and Field and is a member of the 4×400-meter relay squad.
Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania announced the discontinuance of eight varsity athletic teams effective the end of the current academic year. Eliminated will be field hockey, golf, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s tennis and wrestling. The total number of students affected in the sports discontinued is 122.
Canisius Senior Josh Henry (Erie, Pa) scored a goal in last Fridays 5-2 win over Connecticut. He played three seasons with Harbor Creek before joining the Green Mountain Glades in the Eastern Junior Hockey League.
Lake Erie Speedway drivers will once again race for one of the largest year end point funds of any track in the area during the 2006 race season. $63,835 dollars will be awarded to the drivers at the season ending banquet. During the 2005 race season there were 79 drivers that were eligible for a portion of the $56,965 dollars in year-end money, which did not include the $15,000 dollars in bonus money awarded to Late Model champion, Jay Sommers.
