Someone broke into the North East PA Wine and Spirits Store, the state run liquor store with overpaid union workers, and waled out with thousands of dollars of booze. The break-in happend between late Sunday to early Monday morning. Anyone out there planning a big party?

The estate of late developer Stephen McGarvey has received six bids for his Buffalo real estate portfolio, which includes the vacant Trico windshield wiper plant and the former M. Wile clothing plant, which has been converted to offices. Chuck Peters of Erie based Altair Management, which is overseeing the sale, said a total of six bids were submitted by the May 31 deadline.
A group of 43 Mercyhurst students, faculty and friends took a nine-day tour of Poland in late May, bringing music wherever they went and receiving the warm hospitality of the Poles in return.They entertained the crowds at the old city squares of Krakow and Warsaw, as well as the famous underground cathedral in the Wielizka salt mine outside Krakow. The choir traveled to Poland specifically to sing at Mass and perform a sacred concert at the cathedral in Lublin. Under the direction of Rebecca Ryan, the 29 students sang in Lublin Cathedral on May 26. Polish national radio broadcast the Mass.

The Virginia Tech athletics department, along with head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser, announced Tuesday the hiring of Tony Robie as the associate head coach for the Tech wrestling program. Robie comes to Blacksburg after serving as the head coach at Binghamton University in New York last year. A native of Erie, Pa, Robie was a Dean’s List student at Edinboro, and received the school’s Academic Achievement Award before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1997. Robie racked up a 126-23 record on the collegiate mat for Edinboro.
Adam Mulherin, Joe Thon and Mike Bringley of the Mercyhurst College men’s lacrosse team were all chosen as All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

Dog Days of Summer: Hike for you and your pooch will be held on Thursday June 8 at 6 pm at Presque Isle State Park. Parade your pup around the park and learn a little, too! The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm through July 8th. Over 5,000 bikers are expected in Erie on Saturday June 10 to raise awareness and support for US troops serving in the Iraq war and for the Western Pennsylvania Families of Fallen Heroes Foundation. The Penn State Behrend Alumni Society is hosting a Full Moon Fundraiser at the papermoon Restaurant on Tuesday, June 13, from 6 – 9 p.m. to benefit The Logan Music Series: Music at Noon and the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society scholarship. Located at 1325 State Street in downtown Erie, Paper Moon’s Full Moon fundraisers are held each full moon. Dr Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science and professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Night in Astronomy event on Thursday, June 22. Knacke will speak on “Jupiter, The Giant Planet” beginning at 8:30 p.m. in 101 Behrend Science Building. Weather permitting, astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory will follow from 9:30 until 11 pm. The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park. This year’s fesl features demonstrating artists, crafters, a song contest, award winning children’s area, ethnic foods, student video and digital media competition, juried panorama art show, computer intruction programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.
