Sunburst Electronics, an Erie PA based electronic contract manufacturer, expanded its production capabilities to include the manufacturing of lead free electronic controls bound for Europe. The European Union, via its RoHS environmental directive, mandated that lead free solder materials be used in electronic products, effective July 1, 2006.
On Monday, June 12, 22 Interns and Residents will graduate form the Millcreek Community Hospital post-graduate program. Six of the eleven interns and eight of the eleven residents are LECOM Graduates.Two of the residents are the first graduates of the new MCH pharmacy residency program. Eight interns will continue their medical training as residents in Erie. Four of the residents will remain in Erie and one will work in Meadville. The hospital will honor the interns and residents at a luncheon at the Ambassador Conference and Banquet Center from Noon to 1:30 pm on Monday, June 12.
Romeo was named radio director and is taking over the mid day spot at Clear Channel top 40 WHTZ (Z100) New York, beginning June 23. He is a native of Dubois and spent a couple of years in Erie at Rocket 101/Star 104 when he was attending Clarion University.
Erie PA native and Iowa great Ed Hinkel signed a 3 year free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts. He joins former Erie Cathedral Prep and Hawkeye teammate Bob Sanders with the Colts.
Ashlyn Zellefrow hit a walk-off 3 run home run with one out in the bottom of the 7th as Harbor Creek edged Brookville 4-2 in the PIAA Class AA softball quarterfinals. Harbor Creek will face Sto-Rox on Monday in the semifinals.
The Erie Cathedral Prep baseball team defeated Mt Lebo 5-2. Erie Cathedral Prep will face Manheim Township (25-2) in the PIAA Class AAAA semifinals Monday.
Erie Villa Maria rallied from a three-run deficit to beat Bishop Canevin 12-9. Villa Maria and California, the WPIAL champion, will meet in the Class A baseball semifinals Monday.
Corry beat Ambridge 5-1. Corry will face Punxsutawney in the Class AAA softball semifinals Monday.
New Hampshire took both games of a doubleheader from the Erie Seawolves on Thursday by scores of 5-1 and 1-0.
Hannah Smith of Rice Lake, WI announced she will attend Allegheny College. Smith, who specializes in the hurdles, will run track at Allegheny and also try out for the women’s basketball team.

The late Jonathan Larson, best known as the creator of the stage sensation RENT, wrote only one other musical in his short life “tick, tick… BOOM!” The musical will be performed at the Roadhouse Theater Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm through July 8th. Over 5,000 bikers are expected in Erie on Saturday June 10 to raise awareness and support for US troops serving in the Iraq war and for the Western Pennsylvania Families of Fallen Heroes Foundation. The Science in Motion Program at Gannon University will host a free summer workshop for high school chemistry and biology teachers from Erie County schools.The workshop is scheduled for June 12-16 and will include a symposium with lectures given by Gannon University faculty members. Participants also will have the opportunity to perform water sampling and testing from Lake Erie as well as attend laboratory sessions and related activities.The Science in Motion Program serves as a resource for local teachers and students by providing opportunities to participate in experiments and making lab equipment and technology more accessible. Dr Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science and professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Night in Astronomy event on Thursday, June 22. Knacke will speak on “Jupiter, The Giant Planet” beginning at 8:30 p.m. in 101 Behrend Science Building. Weather permitting, astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory will follow from 9:30 until 11 pm. The 2006 Erie Summer Festival of the Arts takes place June 22-25 at Liberty Park.
