Since 1990, Mercyhurst College has been the venue of choice for Pennsylvania’s academically and artistically talented high school students who participate each summer in a five-week, full-scholarship program known as the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts (PGSA). In fact, at 17 years, Mercyhurst is the longest-standing venue for the PGSA, which was launched in 1973 and is the oldest among the eight Governor’s Schools of Excellence in the state, according to PGSA program director Douglas Woods. Now through July 29, the Erie campus is home to 200 students from across the state who have come to immerse themselves in a total arts environment, learning from master artists how to stretch their creativity, knowledge and techniques. They include 60 visual artists, 60 musicians, 30 actors, 30 dancers and 20 writers chosen from more than 1,800 applicants. The intensive program is staffed by a faculty of arts practitioners from around the globe. Students pursue one art area and also have the opportunity to take electives. Nightly performances, concerts and gallery openings are highlights of the program for the PGSA community. Extracurricular activities, like informal coffeehouses, athletic events and residential programming promote a comprehensive arts-focused living-and-learning experience.
