Erie PA News and Events for Saturday August 12, 2006

On December 4th, 2005, the Buckeye arrived at Erie Shipbuilding in Erie, PA under tow of the tug Olive L Moore. The tug was mated with the Buckeye becoming a new articulated tug/barge unit. The Buckeye became the first vessel in 9 years to be drydocked at the Erie shipyard when she entered. The vessle has been named the Lewis J Kuber. The $2 million project took 7 months to complete. The company will be hired about 3 dozen marine welders before the end of the year with the company expecting to hire 150 total employees in the next couple of years.

In 1764, General Bradstreet, in command of 3,000 British solders, stopped at Presque Isle, future day Erie PA, on his way to the relief of Detroit, and upon his return occupied the fort. On this date in 1784, the 12th of August, he made a treaty with the Shawnee and Delaware tribes of Ohio. General Thomas Gage later rejected Bradstreet’s treaty on the grounds that the Colonel had exceeded his authority in making it.

Greene Township received a $1000 Municipal Technology Assistance Program Broadband Connectivity and Web Development Grant. Greene township supervisors plan to use the monies for both broadband internet connection and web site development utilizing a state sanctioned program called Dynamic Site Framework.

In July, the Northwest Commission closed one loan: a $137,000 EDA/RLF loan closed for Moon Tool and Die Company of Crawford County. The loan was used to purchase equipment. Two jobs will be created within the next three years. Three other companies were also approved for loans: Arvite Technologies and Premier Conduit of Erie County; and Venango Steel of Venango County.

Allison Vincent was named functional business analyst for the marketing department at the University College of Syracuse University. She is a graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.

Connecticut took advantage of three Erie SeaWolves errors, and scored three unearned runs in a 5-4 victory.

Mercyhurst College women’s water polo team head coach Curtis Robinette announced five recruits: Chrissy Genian, Jenna Jefferds, Jacqueline Phillips, Rhonda Marable and Sam Shehan.

The St Paul’s Annual Italian Festival takes place through Sunday at the parish located at 1617 Walnut St in Erie.

The Thermal G Eagles Radio Controlled Club 10th annual Model Air Show will be held August 12th at 10 am. See aerobatic demonstrations with giant scale aircraft, helicopters, and more. This event is being held at the Erie County Technical School at 8500 Oliver Road just outside of Erie in Summit Township (map).

Big plans are in place highlighting the adventures of Lewis and Clark at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) and Presque Isle State Park the weekend of August 11-13, 2006. Fun activities and programs for all ages have been coordinated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Presque Isle Partnership to provide a better understanding of what Lewis and Clark may have encountered during their adventurous days. Activities will include a Lewis and Clark Family Scavenger Hunt, Big Green Screen Trivia Contest, Campfire Songs, Arts and Crafts Programs, Book Signing by Manny Twofeathers, Author of “My Road to the Sundance”, Woodcarving Demonstrations by Jeri Kline, a Camp Adventure and Lagoon Pontoon Boat Rides. In addition, the Sunset Cafe will be preparing food items from the Lewis and Clark Cookbook with a popular favorite, fresh roasted corn with specialty butters. People can experience the National Geographic Lewis and Clark, A Great Journey West film firsthand on the 45’ wide, 4-story high Big Green Screen to top off the weekend. Special theater packages will be offered all weekend.

The Erie Sertoma Club and the Erie Kiwanis Club have teamed up to bring you the 10th annual Erie Zoo-B-Que. The Zoo B-Q menu includes Chicken, Corn on the Cob, Potato Chips, a Dinner Roll, Butter, Drinks and more. The site for the 2 day event will be the ever popular Glenwood Park adjacent to the Erie Zoo (Rt 505, Glenwood Park Ave., S of W 38th St) and thus will provide drive through service for the event August 12th and 13th. The mouth-watering feast begins at 11 am both days and runs until 6 pm. Tickets for the event can be purchased by visiting a number of locations. These venues include the Erie Zoo, the Erie General Electric Federal Credit Union offices, the Erie Zoo Offices and at the Zoo B-Q during the event. You can also acquire tickets from any Sertoma or Kiwanis member . Tickets are on sale now and are only $7.

Scooters is hosting the 1st annual Motorcycles 4 Meals poker run to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of NW PA on Saturday August 12, 2006. Registration starts at 9 am at the Food Bank, 1703 Ash Street with the first bike leaving at Noon. There will be FREE food, FREE music, Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle at Scooters (last stop). The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association is hosting their 1st Walleye and Steelhead Pro-Am Team Tournament on August 12 and 13 from the port of Erie. There will be $20,000.00 worth of cash and prizes given out between the professional and amateur division.

The United We Stand Theater Troupe production of “Dreamgirls!” runs until Sunday, August 20 at the Metroplex on Buffalo Road. Showtimes are 7 pm, and 3 pm for the Sunday matinees. Ticket price of $15 includes a buffet dinner one hour before the show.

Family First Sports Park is hosting the 2006 Hoops Classic 3-on-3 Streetball Tournament on Saturday August 18.

Celebrate Erie takes place Aug 18-20 in downtown Erie. The Clarks, Seven Mary Three, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Povertyneck Hillbillies and the Beach Boys are a few of the musical acts. This event was formerly called ‘We Love Erie Days.’ It’s been 5 years since the name change.

The 10th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held September 2-3, 2006 from 11-8 daily at St Nick’s Grove, 5131 Old French Road (Route 97).

Erie’s last blast of summer, the second annual Erie Heritage Festival, featuring a special Erie Philharmonic Pops concert on the Bay, will be held on Saturday, September 9, at Liberty Park’s Pepsi Amphitheater.

Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Mercyhurst Laker Alumni Basketball Game which is scheduled for September 9 at 7 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletics Center (MAC)..
