Erie PA News and Events for Monday January 22, 2007

I received the following from a reader that brings up a great point -

I’m just wondering why there has not been any ink given to the City of Erie’s 2007 Budget. Of particular interest to me was the overstating of the “estimated” health insurance costs. The budget allocates approximately $16,500 for each city employee, even though last years expenses were only approximately $13,000 for those employees with coverage for their spouse and children. This current budget does not address employees who are single, married w/o children, single with children or those who elected the buy out option. This one line item of the budget is easily overstated by $2 million. The previous budgets were appropriately accused of overstating expected revenues. This one is inflating expected expenses. Why is no one taking the city to task for raising taxes when it wasn’t necessary?

Where did they come up with that figure of $16,500? Just a WAG? Is it overstated just to raise taxes so they can spend they money elsewhere? I understand that police officers and firefighters have dangerous jobs and can see that their health insurance would be higher than people with other jobs. But paying over $16,500 for insurance is just nuts if that figure is right. That’s just an unacceptable amount. Was ANY effort given to try and find a lower carrier? Doesn’t the city belong to any organization that offers group insurance? Whoever sells the city this high priced insurance is probably sitting on a beach laughing.

I saw that, but unless I’m missing something, do they even mention the URL where his blog is located at? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

If you want to read the article but don’t want to give your personal info to the ETN, you can get a login and pw at Bug Me Not:

And not only do they not mention the URL, they don’t give the actual name of the blog, if anyone wanted to Google it. Brilliant.

  4. name withheld says:

How was he selected for this position ? Is there an official job definition/classification ? Was the opening advertised ? What are his goals, and how will attainment be objectively measured ? How will his overall job performance be assessed ?

  5. ron says:

rich – when they did the story on me, they didn’t put my url on the website, it was only in a sidebar on the actual paper.

good luck to ryan teribery on working on that site. when i last saw/touched it, it was horribly maintained. i take it that DNS LLC. (http://www.dnsllc.com) is no longer the owner of the site?
