A court hearing was held yesterday concerning the Erie Golf Course. The hearing will continue in April. The city wants to sell the property while the Lake Erie Region Conservancy, the Keep Erie Golf Course Open Committee which is headed by former councilman Jim Casey, and Jim Casella, the former assistant city public works director, sued to prevent the city from selling it. A deed restriction currently prevent the city from selling the course and states it must be a golf course or park. The city run course lost money. The city officials can barely keep the city going so it’s no surprise it lost money. Their marketing effort was limited to having the phone number published. The is no mention on the City of Erie site of the three city owned golf courses.
The 18-hole Erie course at the Erie Golf Club facility located in Millcreek is a par 69 at 5,682 yards. The course rating is 67.2 and it has a slope rating of 111. It was designed by A W Tillinghast (pictured)and opened in 1919.

 

Aaron J Thomas, Nicholas A Olson and Don A Fray, all of Erie, PA were charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, making graffiti, possession of a graffiti instrument and sixth-degree conspiracy by Jamestown NY police. More charges are expected as the number of properties tagged now numbers over 30. The trio is also now being investigated Erie Police.

There is a story in today’s Ashtabula Star Beacon that even Ashtabula County is benefiting from Presque Isle Downs and Casino in Erie. Buses are stopping at area restaurants and people are booking local hotel rooms. Ashtabula is only about 30 from the racino.

On this date – March 27, 1794: Congress authorizes the establishment of the United States Navy.

 

This is a fire truck and Dolly the Dalmatian, who we have come to learn was at the old Engine Company 6 at West 18th and Liberty Streets. It was done in bead work embroidery by The Lone Beader, a former Erie resident now living in Massachusetts. Pretty cool.

 

Dr Jackalyn Govier, a family practice physician at the Family Practice and Orthopedic Care Center at the Community Health Center of Branch County recently passed the American Osteopathic Board Exam. She received her doctorate degree in osteopathy from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, Pa.

Union County Pennsylvania District Attorney D Peter Johnson has announced his candidacy for re-election. Johnson is a native of Erie.

Curtis Financial Group LLC, a Philadelphia-based investment banking firm, has opened a regional office in Pittsburgh. Curtis believes having a physical presence will help to drive more business in the Pittsburgh area, as well as in Erie. Curtis, formed in 1994, currently employs 12. It specializes in assisting middle market and emerging growth businesses with selling their companies, mergers and acquisitions and raising capital. In 2006, Curtis was involved in 17 transactions with approximately $400 million in transaction value.

The Mercyhurst men’s lacrosse team remained Number 3 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Top 10 poll.

Three Erie Otters are eligible for the 2007 NHL Draft and are expected to be taken in the first two rounds. Central Scouting Bureau’s mid-season report saw Zach Torquato ranked 36th, Nick Palmieri was 43rd overall, and Josh Kidd was 49th.


The St Martins Center 9th annual Homeownership Expo will be held March 29 from 11:30 am – 6:30 pm at the Blasco Memorial Library. There will be information on homes, mortgage products, refinancing options, homes inspections, lead paint issues and more. Admission is free and open to everyone.

Mercyhurst College welcomes noted historian Dr Ralph Ketcham, Emeritus Professor of History, Political Science and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, who will address “Lincoln’s Union: Where it came from, and what it Meant,” on Thursday, March 29, at 8 pm in Walker Recital Hall.

Author and actor Peter Coyote will kick off the 2007 Literary Festival at Mercyhurst College with an appearance on Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 pm in the college’s Taylor Little Theatre. The festival, with a theme of “The Arts and the Counter-Culture: Then and Now,” continues April 19 with a visit by novelist Francine Prose and culminates April 25 with an event celebrating student creativity.

 

 

The Erie Micro Brew Festival presented by WQLN will be held April 21 at Union Station at 14th and French Streets. There will be 2 sampling sessions 1-4 pm and 5-8 pm. All proceeds support public broadcasting and all PLCB laws apply. Attendees must be 21. Tickets will be available soon at many Erie area locations. Scheduled to attend are: The BrewErie at Union Station, The Erie Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing, Pennsylvania Brewery, Voodoo Brewery, The Flying Bison, Ellicottville Brewing Company, North Country Brewing Company, Hereford and Hops, Sprague Farm and Brew Works, The Buffalo Brew Pub, Magic Hat Brewing and the East End Brewing Company.
