The Erie Community Foundation will be receiving nearly $7 million at the late Margaret Spaeder. I just received a quick email about the gift so I don’t have the breakdown to which organization will benefit. The Erie Community Foundation is a collection of charitable endowments operating under the administrative umbrella of a single public charity. Their assets now total around $150 million.

Frank Sherman of Williamsport, was elected Grand Counselor (state president) of the Grand Jurisdiction of Pennsylvania, United Commercial Travelers of America, at their 104th state convention held in Erie, PA. UCT was founded in 1888 by traveling salesmen.

The Erie McDowell boys won the PIAA Class AAA Track and Field Championship.

The Erie Illusion women’s football team crushed Central Pennsylvania 39-0.

The Erie SeaWolves fell to the Akron Aeros at Canal Park 3-1. Erie and Akron continue their series on Sunday at Canal Park…2:05 First pitch. For Erie, RHP Eddie Bonine (4-1, 2.73 ERA) will take the mound against LHP Shawn Nottingham (4-2, 2.49 ERA).

Mississippi Mudcats beat the Erie Freeze 53-47.

Due to inclement weather, Lake Erie Speedway officials were forced to reschedule the opening night event for the 2007 season. Opening night at Lake Erie Speedway will now take place next Saturday, June 2nd. All events that were scheduled for May 26th, including the MAARA 100 and the “Race to Read” program, which will now take place on Saturday, September 15. Speedway officials will now be planning for the June 2 race, which will feature the Plyler Overhead Door Late Models, Dodge Trucks, Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks, Jensen’s Target Collision Krazy Kompacts, Boyer RV Bandoleros, and Legends. Tickets are on sale now on their web site, or by calling the speedway offices at (814) 725-3303 or toll free at 1-866-LESRACE. Adult Tickets are $8 in advance, and $12 on race day. Kids tickets are $4 in advance and $6 on raceday.

Mercyhurst will take on LeMoyne for the Division II National Lacrosse Championship today at 4:30 pm. The game will be played at M and T Bank Stadium in Baltimore and will be shown live on CSTV. Ranked Number 1 in the country, Mercyhurst’s only loss came in an 8-7 overtime loss to LeMoyne early in the season. All-session tickets for the 3 championship games (Div I, Div II, Div III) are over 44,000 sold.

The 2007 Memorial Day Shootout will be held at the host venue of Family First Sports Park in Erie PA, May 26-28. Well over 150 teams are expected. The Memorial Day Shootout is for premier soccer teams ages U9-U19 and is among the top college recruiting tournaments. The tournament will feature some of the best boys and girls soccer teams in the United States and Canada. This is a US CLUB Soccer event. USYSA teams are permitted to participate. Every hotel room within 50 miles is booked for this event. Expect delays at restaurants all along Peach Street.

The 17th annual Erie Wild Rib Cook Off and Music Festival takes place in Perry Square Park in downtown, Erie PA on May 30 – June 2, 11 am – 10 pm daily. Eight professional rib cooking teams will converge in downtown Erie offering the finest in BBQ cuisine. This event also includes: delicious festival foods, arts and crafts, vendors, informational booths, “Best Ribs” contest, local and regional bands inflatable amusements, games and more. Admission is FREE.

The annual Edinboro University Sports Memorabilia Auction will be held May 30 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Erie. Admission is $5. Among memorabilia being offered are autographed jerseys by Dan Marino, Jerome Bettis, Bob Sanders, Jim Kelly and Grant Hill; autographed footballs by Carson Palmer, Gale Sayers, Bettis and Antonio Gates; autographed photos by Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, Terry Bradshaw, Brett Favre, Steve Young, Arnold Palmer and Troy Aikman; and autographed baseballs by Sandy Koufax and Freddie Sanchez.

North East senior citizens can learn how to keep their minds healthy at “Brain Health for Wise Minds,” a luncheon seminar presented by nationally recognized speaker and author Dr. Linda Rhodes, on Thursday, May 31, at the North East Senior Center, 50 E Main St, North East. The event, sponsored by the Hirtzel Institute on Aging and Health Education at Mercyhurst North East, is open to all area seniors and includes a free lunch. The seminar will begin at 10:30 am, with lunch to follow. Reservations are required by May 28 by calling 725-5195.

Lake Erie Speedway and the Erie Runners Club are teaming up to host the 6k Run and Walk and 1/2 Mile Youth Race on June 2, 2007 to benefit the St Martins Center. This highly charged event will begin with a 1/2 mile youth race, which will take place around the oval racetrack. Immediately after the youth race, the 6k race will begin at the entrance of Lake Erie Speedway on Delmas Drive. The first leg of the race will be run on a hard packed dirt road. Runners will then make a square loop around the Speedway property on paved roads making their way back onto the oval and ending at the track’s start/finish line. This event will mark the first time the Erie Runners Club comes to the speedway. While there, runners can visit exhibit booths from Saint Vincent Hospital, St Martin Center, Erie Federal Credit Union, Point Click Learn and more. Runners will also get to stay at Lake Erie Speedway that night, for a full night of NASCAR Whelen Championship Racing. Prices are $20 for the 6k run, $10 for the youth ½ mile run, and $10 for a non-race participant.

Camp Notre Dame is holding an open house on Sunday June 3 from 1-4 pm. Camp Notre Dame offers day and overnight camping for ages 4-16.

Penn State Behrend’s popular College for Kids returns this summer with over 150 weeklong classes to educate, entertain, and inspire young people ages 6 to 18. College for Kids courses begin June 11 and continue through August 10, with the exception of Fourth of July week. Classes are organized by age and held during morning or afternoon sessions, with before- and after-care available for an additional fee. Returning classes include past favorites in guitar, golf, knitting, word processing, PowerPoint, model rocketry, acting, sign language, and scrap booking instruction; World War II history, “Engineering MythBusters,” and “Dinosaur Discovery.” New courses this year: “Storm Chasing 101″ taught by WJET-TV meteorologist Tom Atkins; two finance classes, “Kids and Money” for the younger student and “Show Me the Money” for teens; “Let’s Cheer,” “Conversational Spanish,” “Introduction to Chess,” “Star Wars and the Roman Empire,” “Crafts from the Beach,” “Space Camp: Return to the Moon,” and an investigation of the paranormal called “X-Files.” “We also have a very special opportunity this year for kids ages 12 to 18–a chance to paint a mural on the fountain in Perry Square under the direction of local artist AJ Noyes,” Mary Trott, College for Kids program coordinator, noted. “Because of the significance of this community service project, this will be one of the rare College for Kids classes that meets for a full day.” Perry Square fountain painting will take place the week of July 23. For artists not old enough to participate in the mural project or unable to commit to a full-day class, Noyes also will teach College for Kids courses in hand-sewing and beading, craft painting, nature drawing and painting, and portrait drawing. Costs vary by course but start at $70 per weeklong class. Before- or after-class supervision is available for an additional $10 per week. A provocative evening of poetry and dance will celebrate the release of a new book by a faculty member in the BFA in Creative Writing program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Lecturer in English and performance poet Sean Thomas Dougherty will collaborate with modern dancer Shelly Walker to premier readings from his latest collection, Broken Hallelujahs (Boa Editions, 2007). The event will take place at 8 pm Friday, June 15, at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State St, and is free and open to the public.

The Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul will play a concert at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA on July 31 as part of “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour.” Tickets go on sale June 2 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the SeaWolves box office at Jerry Uht Park and on SeaWolves.com. Children under 12 get in FREE with each paid adult ticket holder.
