Harborcreek Township began work on a number of additional improvements at Shades Beach Park. Construction work includes 4 new boat launches, fishing piers, as well as the improved beach
area. On the shores of Lake Erie, Shades Beach is located at 7000 East Lake Road (Route 5) at the intersection of Bartlett Road. Shades Beach Park encompasses a large area along Eight Mile Creek where there are trails, woodlands, play areas, picnic grounds, and beach area. Featuring two complete organized picnic facilities; each with complete kitchen operations, restrooms, playground facilities, and horseshoe courts.

 

The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program was conceived in 1929 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to meet a need for reliable, uniform crime statistics for the nation. Here is the FBI data with Offenses Reported to Law Enforcement by State by City 100,000 and over in Population. The statistics for Erie PA are as follows: Violent crime – 472 in 2005 and 554 in 2006, Murder – 6 in 2006 and 2 in 2006, Forcible rape – 75 in 2005 and 69 in 2006, Robbery – 200 in 2005 and 275 in 2006, Aggravated assault – 191 in 2005 and 208 in 2006, Property crime – 2867 in 2005 and 2987 in 2006, Burglary – 632 in 2005 and 740 in 2006, Larceny theft – 2129 in 2005 and 2106 in 2006, Motor vehicle theft – 106 in 2005 and 141 in 2006, and Arson – 35 in 2005 and 38 in 2006.
The City of Erie had 205 officers in the Bureau of Police in 2005 and had 43 layoffs dropping the force down to 162 officers. The rape of the Erie Bureau of Police was not counted in the statistics.

LECOM Bradenton’s inaugural class began their final year on Monday. Students will do rotations for a second year before graduation, then complete a 3 year residency in a hospital.

The Mercyhurst College Department of Applied Forensic Sciences yesterday kicked off its annual installment of short courses with the 16th Death Scene Archaeology Short Course: Field Methods in the Location, Recovery, and Interpretation of Human Remains from Outdoor Contexts. The series is intended for professionals in forensic science and related fields as well as students seeking to update and fine-tune their skills. The first 5-day short course (June 4-8) exposes participants to state-of-the-art techniques in the location, archaeological recovery, and taphonomic interpretation of human remains from outdoor and fire-related forensic scenes. The 7th Annual Forensic Anthropology Short Course in Human Identification: Laboratory Methods in the Identification of Human Skeletal Remains follows June 11-15. The 4th Annual Traumatized Bone Short Course: Bone Trauma and Pseudo-Trauma in Suspected Violent Deaths is slated for June 18-22. The series concludes with the 4th Annual Post-Bomb Blast Recovery Short Course: Documentation and Recovery of Human and Physical Evidence at the Terrorism Crime Scene June 25-29.

Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge of Erie will discuss “Reforming US Visitor Entry Policies” at the National Press Club on Friday, June 15.

John H Guelcher, CPA, MBA, received a Joseph E Sterrett Fellow Award from the Erie Chapter of Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). Guelcher, who was honored at a reception at the Kahkwa Club, is a past president of PICPA’s Erie Chapter and widely considered a leader in corporate and community-service circles in the Erie area. In addition to the award recognition, a donation of $1,000 will be made in his name to the PICPA Scholarship Fund.

To meet growing demand, Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, has added multiple opportunities for summer admissions visits by high school sophomores and juniors. The college’s traditional large-group Spend a Summer Day admissions events will be held between 2 and 4:30 pm on Friday, July 13, and on Friday, August 10. Similar Spend a Summer Evening programs will be offered on two Thursdays, July 12 and August 9. Those begin at 6 pm and conclude at 8:30 pm. The new “Getting to Know Us” sessions will be held daily from Monday, July 9, through Wednesday, August 22, with the exception of the four Spend a Summer Day/Evening event dates. These sessions begin at 1 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and at 9 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays; each lasts about two and one-half hours. Reservations are required. The Erie SeaWolves are back in action on Tuesday night at home against the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox)…7:05 first pitch. LHP Jon Connolly (2-3, 3.31 ERA) returns to the rotation and gets the start in game one. He will be opposed by LHP Tommy Hottovy (1-6, 4.86 ERA).

RHP Eulogio De La Cruz went from the Erie SeaWolves to AAA Toledo and LHP Ian Ostlund was sent from Toledo to Erie.

Vision Quest Sport Fishing, a team led by Pete Alex of Erie, Pa. came in fifth overall at the 23rd Annual Skip Hartman Memorial Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament. For his finish, he also won the West Basin Challenge Cup, tournament points totaled between Niagara and Orleans county events.

“Go Fishing with the Kellogg’s Fishing Team DVD” is available to consumers nationwide who return a mail-in coupon from select Kellogg cereals, Pop-Tarts and Rice Krispies Treats sold throughout North America. The Kellogg’s Fishing Team includes pro angler Dave Lefebre of Erie, Pa.

Jessi Saunders of Highland High School in Medina County, Ohio has signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and volleyball career at Gannon University.


The first Erie Downtown Block Party of 2007 is Thursday June 6 on State Street between 10th and 11th with Nicky’s Pub, Docksider, and Papa George’s as hosts. The bands are Next of Kin (country), Leave No Trace (metal), Matty B and the Dirty Pickles (rock).

The Erie Art Museum’s Contemporary Music Series will present jazz duo Billy Bang and Kahil El’ Zabar at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street on Monday, June 11 at 8 pm. Admission is $12 for general admission, $10 for Erie Art Museum and Jazz Erie members and $6 for students and seniors.

Penn State Behrend’s popular College for Kids returns this summer with over 150 weeklong classes to educate, entertain, and inspire young people ages 6 to 18. College for Kids courses begin June 11 and continue through August 10, with the exception of Fourth of July week. Classes are organized by age and held during morning or afternoon sessions, with before- and after-care available for an additional fee. Returning classes include past favorites in guitar, golf, knitting, word processing, PowerPoint, model rocketry, acting, sign language, and scrap booking instruction; World War II history, “Engineering MythBusters,” and “Dinosaur Discovery.” New courses this year: “Storm Chasing 101″ taught by WJET-TV meteorologist Tom Atkins; two finance classes, “Kids and Money” for the younger student and “Show Me the Money” for teens; “Let’s Cheer,” “Conversational Spanish,” “Introduction to Chess,” “Star Wars and the Roman Empire,” “Crafts from the Beach,” “Space Camp: Return to the Moon,” and an investigation of the paranormal called “X-Files.” “We also have a very special opportunity this year for kids ages 12 to 18–a chance to paint a mural on the fountain in Perry Square under the direction of local artist AJ Noyes,” Mary Trott, College for Kids program coordinator, noted. “Because of the significance of this community service project, this will be one of the rare College for Kids classes that meets for a full day.” Perry Square fountain painting will take place the week of July 23. For artists not old enough to participate in the mural project or unable to commit to a full-day class, Noyes also will teach College for Kids courses in hand-sewing and beading, craft painting, nature drawing and painting, and portrait drawing. Costs vary by course but start at $70 per weeklong class. Before- or after-class supervision is available for an additional $10 per week. The 19th annual Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Event takes place June 14 to 17 at Robertson Soccer Field on the campus of Allegheny College in Meadville PA.

A provocative evening of poetry and dance will celebrate the release of a new book by a faculty member in the BFA in Creative Writing program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Lecturer in English and performance poet Sean Thomas Dougherty will collaborate with modern dancer Shelly Walker to premier readings from his latest collection, Broken Hallelujahs (Boa Editions, 2007). The event will take place at 8 pm Friday, June 15, at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State St, and is free and open to the public.

Darren Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a Summer Open House Night in Astronomy event at the college on Wednesday, June 27. Williams’ lecture, “What is a Planet? Why Not Pluto?” will begin at 8:30 pm in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building, and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Williams’ lecture and telescope viewing are intended for a non-technical audience, and are open to the public free of charge.
