Erie PA News and Events for Monday December 3, 2007

Artur Santos, a 3 year old boy, has Maple Syrup Urine Disease, a genetic disease most common in the Amish community. On Tuesday December 4, Artur will have leg surgery at the Shriner’s Hospital of Erie. He won’t be able to be on his feet again for the next 6 weeks.
The Santos family was a hard-working, educated family. One day Arthur fell into a coma for a month. They sold everything they owned and moved 5,000 miles from Fortaleza, Brazil to Pittsburgh to see specialists at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. They speak Portuguese and had to learn English. That was back in 2005. The family is still here in Western Pennsylvania getting help for their son.
The family has two web site set up. Help Artur and Artur Updates.

Union Station in Erie at 14th and Peach was dedicated on December 3, 1927 – 80 years ago today. Jim Berlin has an excellent write-up on the building his company, Logistics Plus, now owns. Although 70 trains a day go past the station, only the Amtrak Lake Shore Limited now stops. Amtrak only uses a sliver of the 100,000 sq ft building. The classic Art Deco building was designed by Alfred Fellheimer and Steward Wagner. Columbia University has a collection of 1,315 architectural drawings by Fellheimer and Wagner. Union Station has a huge 2 story bomb shelter. Somewhere below there are 2 subways that were once used to carry baggage and passengers. There are some thoughts as to placing an Erie Rail Museum in the building.

A company called PC Web Doc is advertising heavily at least in the Erie area. Their main service is fixing your PC problems live by logging into your PC. Their business registration with the state goes by the name of Merit Technology Group, Inc with a dba as PCWEBDOC. Their business address is a nice home in the Camelot subdivision on King Arthur Dr in Millcreek. Flags go up when I see no actual person’s name or a business address.
