Lieutenant Colonel Richard J Berrettini died due to injuries received from an improvised explosive device attack in Khowst Province, Afghanistan. LTC Berrettini died Jan 11, nine days after the HMMWV he was a passenger in was attacked. Berrettini, a nurse practitioner, was assigned to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard Medical Detachment, Erie Clinic. He volunteered to serve in Afghanistan and was assigned to the South Carolina National Guard.

The Eerie Horror Film Festival announced that actors Kane Hodder and Tony Moran will be appearing as special guests at their 5th annual event this October. Hodder, stunt man turned actor, is best known for his portrayal of Jason Voorhees in four of the “Friday the 13th” movies. “Kane is one of our most requested guests”, says Festival President Greg Ropp, “It’ll be a real treat for the fans to finally meet “Jason” in the flesh.” Joining Hodder will be another horror icon – actor Tony Moran who portrayed Michael Myers in John Carpenter’s “Halloween” and “Halloween II”. The 2008 Eerie Horror Film Festival will take place October 8-12, in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Suburban Newspapers of America (SNA) has named Chris Krug, executive editor of the Northwest Herald outside Chicago, its Editor of the Year for Daily Newspapers. Krug will be honored at the Spring Publisher’s Conference Editorial Awards Banquet in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla, on Feb 21. Krug is a grad of Erie Cathedral Prep and Allegheny College.

Mohave County (Arizona) Attorney Matt Smith announced he will seek re-election this year. Matt is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a JD, 1985 and Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania with a BA in Political Science, 1982.

Dr Russell Gilchrist, an interventional physiatrist, has joined the medical staff at Frye Regional Medical Center in Charlotte. Gilchrist received his undergraduate degree from Gannon University in Erie, PA and his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The 4th ranked Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team scored three goals in the last 12 minutes of the game to defeat Providence 3-0 Sunday afternoon. The Lakers rebounded after a 7-3 setback Saturday and improved to 15-5-2 overall. The Friars dropped to 9-9-2.

The Edinboro men’s basketball team completed an impressive two days of basketball with an 82-69 win over visiting Bloomsburg on Sunday. The victory came one day after the Fighting Scots handed PSAC East-leading Mansfield a 91-67 defeat. Edinboro is now 10-4.

For the first time since PSAC crossover action began in 2000-01, the Edinboro women’s basketball team finished with a perfect record against the PSAC East. The Fighting Scots finished with an unblemished 7-0 record after handing Bloomsburg a 96-74 defeat on Sunday. The victory left the Fighting Scots with a 9-4 record.

Gannon University will host a Financial Aid Workshop on Wednesday, January 16. The workshop will cover the entire financial aid process as well as a step-by-step review of the questions on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). As part of its series of Pink Ribbon Educational Events for breast cancer survivors and to promote breast cancer awareness, Saint Vincent will present a program on Thursday, January 17, from 6 to 8 pm at the McGarvey Learning Center at Saint Vincent Health Center, 232 West 25th Street, Erie, Pa. Three new exhibits with the theme of art and technology will be presented in Bowman, Penelec and Megahan Galleries at Allegheny College Tuesday, Jan 22 through Wednesday, March 5. Daniel S Mead, president of Verizon Services Corp, will discuss how creation of a centralized business services unit saved the telecommunications giant $562 million in one year during an upcoming presentation for the Sam and Irene Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The Cleveland Indians Caravan will be rolling into Erie January 23, 2008 at the Dr Gertrude A Barber National Institute, 136 East Avenue. The 14th annual Sarah Backstrom Memorial Women’s and Girl’s Hockey Tournament will be held in Erie February 8-10, 2008. Admission is FREE to all games. About 1,000 young ladies plus family and friends will be in town for the weekend. Hotel rooms will be hard to come by and expect delays at restaurants. Who was Sarah Backstrom? She was a feisty red headed defensewoman who gave all off her love of the game and passion to play it to the Erie Lady Lions. Sarah fought every battle to the end, with passion and determination. The Erie Lady Lions lost Sarah to Leukemia but have never lost her spirit.
