The March for Babies takes place today in Crawford County. Grady, Evan, Jenny and Mike are the Crawford County ambassador family for March for Babies. Mike is at $1,335 with donations with a goal of $1,500. The family was featured in a story in the Meadville Tribune – March of Dimes family share their ‘happy ending’. Give a couple of bucks if you can so more families can have happy endings.
A member of the Erie media began a blog in April. Although it’s written under a pseudonym, it took me no time to figure out the author. Hopefully co-workers and other Erie residents keep it under their hats since it’s a good read. On the resignation of Millcreek Township School District Superintendent Dean Maynard taking a job with the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit – “I’m happy for him and terribly, terribly miserable for myself that I am still dam__ to cover the bas____ and psychos that permeate that district.” The blog is called Cubby Scoops.
The building at 1031 State St in Erie was sold for $475,000. A couple of years ago, Sunny Days Child Care was located on the first floor of the building.
US Rep Phil English joined US Coast Guard Captain Scott J Ferguson at a press event at the USCG Station Erie to highlight the importance of safe boating and to announce Erie’s first Annual Eastern Great Lakes Water Safety Expo which will take place on May 17, 2008. To kick-off this year’s National Safe Boating Week (May 17 – 23, 2008), the US Coast Guard Station in Erie will host its first annual Eastern Great Lakes Water Safety Expo on Saturday, May 17 from 10 AM until 4 PM. The event, organized by Captain Ferguson, is open to the public and will feature tours of the Coast Guard Station as well as free US Coast Guard Auxiliary recreational vessel safety inspections. “The Water Safety Expo will help to educate local boaters and their families on the best practices of boating and water safety,” English said. “I commend Capt. Ferguson and the US Coast Guard for taking the initiative to organize what will undoubtedly be a successful event and prepare local boaters for a fun and safe boating season.”
Erma K Briggs of Fort Myers recently turned 100 years old. She retired in 1966 after teaching in Natrona Heights, Pa for more than 30 years. Briggs is a 1930 graduate of Allegheny College.

The Erie Illusion women’s football team opened their season with a 15-0 victory over the Treetown Spitfire, MI on Saturday.

Mercyhurst sophomore pitcher Carrina Crow threw a complete game shutout as the softball team defeated Saginaw Valley State 1-0 Saturday to clinch a spot in the GLIAC Tournament. The Lakers lost game two 5-3 in a contest that featured five home runs.
The Gannon softball team split its final regular-season doubleheader against Northwood Saturday afternoon at Gannon University Field. The Lady Knights earned a 7-6 victory in the opener, before falling 5-1 in the second game.
The Edinboro softball team picked up two wins on the final day of the regular season against Clarion, 8-0 (6 inn) and 2-1. Edinboro improved to 18-18, 10-10 PSAC West.
The Allegheny softball team (23-13, 11-3 NCAC) clinched the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title and the right to host the conference tournament next weekend after sweeping Wittenberg (23-13, 7-7 NCAC) by scores of 4-0 and 5-3 on Saturday.
The Gannon University baseball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State University (26-12, 14-8) at SVSU Baseball Field Saturday afternoon, game two of which saw 39 runs scored between the teams. Gannon lost game two 25-14 and game one 10-3.
Mercyhurst freshman Nick Gillung kept the Grand Valley State offense off balance and senior Josh Schmidt drove in four runs as the Lakers notched a 9-3 win in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, picking up a split on the day.
The Allegheny baseball team (16-17, 8-8 NCAC) wrapped up conference competition with a doubleheader split against Hiram on Saturday. The Gators took the opener 16-6 behind a career-best 4-for-4, five RBI performance from Alex Herrnberger (Eighty Four, Pa./Canon McMillan) but fell by a score of 10-7 in the nightcap.
The Mercyhurst men’s varsity four won its second consecutive championship, defeating Philadelphia University and Villanova at the NCAA Division II East Regional Invitational Saturday in Philadelphia. The women’s varsity eight finished second behind just the top ranked team in Division II.
Harrisburg PA has received an American Indoor Football Association franchise. They will begin play in 2009. New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston is a minority owner of the team. Harrisburg will likely be in the same division with the Erie RiverRats (5-2).
Kaitlyn Bosy has signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Gannon University. Bosy is a swimmer from Courtice, ON, Canada.

A Gannon University professor on Thursday, May 1, will host a discussion on the individual psychology of Alfred Adler. Ken McCurdy, PhD, associate professor, Gannon University community counseling program, will discuss “The Nuts and Bolts of Adlerian Clinical Supervision.” The discussion will be held from 8-10 pm in the Dean’s office on the first floor of Gannon’s Palumbo Academic Center, 824 Peach Street. The event will serve as the monthly TAPTalks colloquium hosted by Gannon University. Gannon’s Community Counseling program, the Gamma Upsilon Chi chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, and the Lake Erie Adlerian Institute are sponsoring the event. The TAPTalks colloquiums present brief, in-depth training experiences focusing on the individual psychology of Alfred Adler. In celebration of The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2008 Preservation Month theme, “Place Matters,” the Erie Center for Design and Preservation is hosting a lecture, seminar and walking tour on May 9-10. All three events are FREE and open to the public. The internationally-known founder of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, Mr. Arthur Ziegler, will be the featured speaker at the Erie Center for Design and Preservation’s first public event. Ziegler’s lecture, “The Good Works of Historic Preservation,” will be delivered Friday, May 9 at 7 PM in the Orientation Theatre of the Erie Maritime Museum, adjacent to the Blasco Memorial Library on Erie’s Bayfront. Ziegler says “historic preservation should be looked upon as both a cultural and economic development tool, leading to community revitalization, local investment, jobs, and a better quality of life.” On Saturday morning, May 10, the Erie Center for Design and Preservation (ECDP) will sponsor a seminar on historic preservation. Topics include: an overview of the National Register of Historic Places, the economics of preservation, and the tax credits afforded to property owners who rehabilitate historic buildings. The seminar will be held Saturday, May 10 from 9 AM to Noon at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 20 East 5th Street. On Saturday afternoon, May 10 , Mr Jeff Kidder AIA of Kidder Wachter Architecture will offer a 90 minute architectural walking tour of lower State Street and Perry Square. Kidder will meet members of the tour on the front steps of the Erie Art Museum, 417 State Street at 1 PM. Kidder will discuss the history of the City of Erie, neighborhood changes and attributes of the remaining historic structures. Kidder believes that “historic preservation in Erie is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability.” Kidder serves on the City of Erie Planning Commission, the Downtown Improvement District board, the Erie Center for Design and Preservation board, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Historic Preservation board.

The charity bellydance event, “Shimmy for a Cure“, will be held May 31 at the Erie Playhouse in downtown Erie, PA. This event will benefit the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.
Head Coach John T Reilly of Gannon University will conduct three sessions of basketball camp this summer. Sessions will be held June 9-13, June 23-27 and August 4-8. His coaching staff, area high school coaches and several of his players will serve as camp instructors. The sessions are designed as teaching camps that emphasize the fundamentals of the game of basketball. The camps are for students in Grades 3-10.
There will be a Rust Belt Bloggers Summit on July 11-12 in Erie. People from Youngstown, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other area cities will be attendance to discuss economic development issues in the region.
The Manufacturers’ Association and Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority annual Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally will be held July 17-20, 2008. While downtown Erie serves as the hub of the rally, related events take place throughout the city and region. Most notably, two outdoor concerts featuring major artists will be held Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, at Liberty Park along Presque Isle Bay.
