One of those worst nightmare accidents happened yesterday afternoon on I-90 near West Springfield, Exit 3, when six people died in a horrible head-on accident. A van traveling east lost control, crossed the grass median, and slammed into a car traveling west. Five people in the van and one person in the car died. One person in each vehicle survived and were taken to Hamot. Buckle up people. None of the victims wore seat belts and the two survivors were wearing seat belts.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, today’s Allegheny College Commencement ceremony will be held indoors, in the Wise Center Sports Forum. Tickets are required for admission to the ceremony. Closed circuit television viewing in Shafer Auditorium is available to guests with children and those not holding tickets. This set-up offers comfortable seating, close-up viewing of the graduates as they receive their degrees, and the ability to easily come and go. A reception in the Campus Center will follow the ceremony. The Commencement ceremony at 10 am will honor 554 graduates – thought to be the largest class in the college’s history – and feature an address by Allegheny president Richard J Cook.

Steve Morse of Erie got ink in a few Maine newspapers including A ride on the rails in the Morning Sentinel. Morse joined over 100 others taking a train from Brunswick to Augusta, a trip which has gone without passenger train travel since the 1960′s.

The Renaissance and Baroque Society of Pittsburgh has hired Elizabeth Etter as executive director. Etter is a graduate of Allegheny College and earned a doctorate in harpsichord performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

The Erie SeaWolves fell to the Harrisburg Senators, dropping their sixth straight game, on Saturday night by a score of 9-0. The shutout loss was the second of the season, and the homestand. The loss brought the SeaWolves record to 15-20. Starting pitcher Josh Rainwater has placed on the DL with a strained oblique. Luis Marte was promoted to Erie from Lakeland. The SeaWolves will look to snap their six-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm at Jerry Uht Park in Erie against the Senators. LHP Jon Connolly (0-1, 4.50 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against RHP Jordan Zimmermann (0-1, 1.59 ERA). The first 1,000 fans will receive a free Pink SeaWolves Cap. The SeaWolves will also wear special pink uniforms that will be auctioned off following the game and proceeds will benefit the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.

Penn State Behrend advanced to the championship round of the AMCC Tournament with a 9-1 win over Frostburg State on Saturday, May 10 before falling to Pitt-Bradford’s late game comeback 4-3. Behrend and Pitt-Bradford will meet on Sunday at 10 am for the decisive game in the double-elimination conference tournament. The title game will determine the 2008 AMCC Champion and decide which team will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Former Erie SeaWolves outfielder Matt Joyce hit his first major league home run for the Detroit Tigers in their Saturday afternoon game with the Yankees.

The Erie Runners Club Mothers Day Race (Formerly the Julie King Run) takes place today, May 11 at 9 am at Presque Isle State Park. This 5 K Run / Walk is a non-competitive event.

The musical “1776″, the first play in which members of the Erie Cathedral Prep Alumni have been invited back to perform, is scheduled for a four-day run in the Erie Cathedral Prep auditorium on the weekend of May 15-18. This production is the third and final performance for this year by the Prep Performing Arts Department, which is under the direction of Father Michael DeMartinis. The special guest director for the show is Almi Clerkin, the managing director of the Erie Playhouse. Join your friends for the 6th Annual Bike Around The Bay in Erie, PA. Gather with hundreds of tri state bicyclists on Saturday, May 17, in Erie, PA at the Intermodal Transportation Center on the Bayfront Parkway to bike around beautiful Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie. The event is a fundraiser for the non-profit youth environmental education organization Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force. There is a 10 mile Town Tour, a 30 mile Bay Tour and a 50 mile Endurance Tour. Theatre 145 will be holding open auditions for cast members of the musical “Remembering Janis.” This play a tribute to singer/songwriter Janis Joplin. “Remembering Janis” is set for a three week run starting on Friday, June 13, 2008. Cast members needed are: Speaker – This role is for a male or female, aged 30-50 years of age. The character is a 1960′s-70′s hippie type. There is no singing involved with his role. The speaker relates his/her memories of Joplin during her career between sets of “Janis’” songs. Be prepared with a 1 minute, in character, monologue. On Saturday, June 7, 2008 there will be a Nautical Flea Market from 10 am to 1 pm at the BCMS (Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies) 40 Holland Street, Erie, PA. Head Coach John T Reilly of Gannon University will conduct three sessions of basketball camp this summer. Sessions will be held June 9-13, June 23-27 and August 4-8. His coaching staff, area high school coaches and several of his players will serve as camp instructors. The sessions are designed as teaching camps that emphasize the fundamentals of the game of basketball. The camps are for students in Grades 3-10.

The Manufacturers’ Association and Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority annual Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally will be held July 17-20, 2008. While downtown Erie serves as the hub of the rally, related events take place throughout the city and region. Most notably, two outdoor concerts featuring major artists will be held Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, at Liberty Park along Presque Isle Bay.
