One person died in their home last night of an apparent natural gas leak or by carbon monoxide poisoning. The home is on Page Street in SE Erie. An official from the Erie County Coroners Office was called to scene as crews from National Fuel worked to repair the leak. Natural gas does not have any odor but mercaptan, thiophane or some other rotten-egg smelling sulfur-based compound is added so most people can easily smell it.
Associated Press writer Ramit Plushnick-Masti has a national story running that prominently features Erie, Rust belt towns turning to tourism. So far, 24 online publications around the country have run the story.

Yesterday there was a cool story by Steven M Sweeney in the Erie Times-News / GoErie.com about Jerry McWilliams finding a mammoth tooth at Presque Isle State Park. Every so often bones are found in the Erie area. One big discovery was made in May of 1880 near Girard Borough. A man plowing fields for WH Palmer found numerous mammoth bones. The animal was thought to be 15 feet long and 12-13 feet high with tusks 8-10 feet long. One of the teeth weighed 3 1/2 pounds.

Secretary Tom Ridge of Erie was invited to spend the weekend at Senator John McCain’s ranch in Sedona, Arizona. Ridge declined as he had plans to travel to the Balkans. Ridge is a consultant for the Albanian government as the country is working on joining NATO.
Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino in Opelousas, Louisiana is naming its new turf track the David A Yount Turf Track. Yount was Assistant General Manager of racetrack and casino operations. He died in April after a year’s fight with cancer. Friends are establishing an art scholarship in his name at his alma mater, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
The Erie SeaWolves snapped a two-game slide on Saturday night at Canal Park with a 5-1 win over the Akron Aeros in game two of a four game series. Danny Christensen (1-4) tossed his best outing of the season in picking up his first win. He went a season-best seven innings, allowing a run on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. The SeaWolves and Aeros continue their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park…2:05 First Pitch. Erie Chamber Orchestra presents “A Tribute to Victor Herbert” on Friday June 6 at St Patrick’s Church, 130 East 4th St in Erie. Head Coach John T Reilly of Gannon University will conduct three sessions of basketball camp this summer. Sessions will be held June 9-13, June 23-27 and August 4-8. His coaching staff, area high school coaches and several of his players will serve as camp instructors. The sessions are designed as teaching camps that emphasize the fundamentals of the game of basketball. The camps are for students in Grades 3-10.
Penn State Behrend will host its second international conference on injection molding, “Injection Molding: Innovation and Emerging Technologies,” from June 10-12. The three-day conference will feature 24 technical presentations, offered concurrently in the mornings, and hands-on tutorials in the afternoons. The Gannon University ShakeXperience Theater Camp will be held Monday, July 28 through Saturday, August 2. This one-week resident high school (through graduation) theater camp is taught by members of Gannon’s theater program and qualified professionals.
