Dan Mulligan didn’t know what to expect when the US Army summoned him from his civilian life as instructor at the Institute for Intelligence Studies at Mercyhurst College to active duty in Iraq last January. He hadn’t fired a weapon since he retired from the military 15 years ago; what’s more, he was 48-years-old. He had to get acquainted with modern-day combat skills, ramp up his fitness level, and get up to speed on the war effort, but, for all that, he had one quality that Washington needed in Iraq: experience. Only, as it turns out, it isn’t his former military experience that is playing a vital role in the war effort as much as it is his experience in the intelligence studies classrooms at Mercyhurst College.
“Mercyhurst is definitely contributing to our success over there,” Mulligan said while home on leave for two weeks in early June. “Some intel studies department materials are being used daily at the Directorate of Intelligence Affairs. Plus, we are planning on having some Mercyhurst students work on projects to standardize the training and procedures within the Iraqi intelligence community. It’s really pretty neat!” Mulligan has been in Baghdad’s International Zone, often called the “Green Zone,” (the heavily guarded diplomatic/government area of closed-off streets in central Baghdad where US occupation authorities live and work) for about three months. He is assigned to the Multi-National Security Transition Command – Iraq, where he is coalition adviser to a number of Iraqi intelligence leadership entities, among them the Directorate of Intelligence Affairs and the Directorate of Strategic HUMINT (HUMan INTelligence) Affairs. “In layman’s terms, I spend my days mentoring and training Iraqis to do intelligence,” Mulligan said. “It’s teaching intelligence just like I do at Mercyhurst, but then also assisting the Iraqis in running their organization and conducting actual intelligence in the war. The goal is to get them to the point where they can be self-sufficient.”
In a story on airline in the Akron Beacon Journal, there comes a quote from Cleveland State University professor Ned Hill, an expert on commercial air travel, who said to look beyond just the Cleveland and Akron-Canton airports. ”Go east to Erie, young man,” Hill joked, speaking of the Pennsylvania city just across the Ohio line. ”Some of the best prices in the region are coming out of the Erie airport.”

“By having our fans be able to watch games with some of the young players we may happen to have with the BayHawks, we can create an even greater fan base,” said Danny Ferry, Cavaliers general manager. “It’s a great thing. From a basketball standpoint, we’ll be able to come and watch games and support the guys we have here and also be able to scout players,” continued Ferry. “Other than the NBA, this is probably the most scouted professional league in the world. To be able to have it this close is very important.”
“With the announcement of the Erie BayHawks as our new D-League affiliate, we will put a premium on taking advantage of the team’s proximity and utilize the league as a key resource for our players’ development,” said Tony DiLeo, 76ers senior vice president and assistant general manager.
