The skies parted on cue at noon, and I (Mike) was able to ride the Ravine Flyer II today for the second time. Thanks to Shane, who lives in Millcreek and teaches at Ft. Lebouf, and his out of town friends for letting me join his group and ride at the very front of the coaster. The coaster holds up after repeat rides.
Two things that are visible from the Ravine Flyer II are Erie’s only wind turbines – one at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and one on Presque Isle by the Stull Interpretive Center. Being on the lake brings a good amount of wind to Erie, and it’s a surprise more turbines haven’t popped up.
That being said, General Electric is looking for a lead system engineer in its Erie plant for a new product introduction relating to Wind Drive Trains. (Loads on wind drive trains are a problem as the size of wind turbines increase.) Job requirements include product validation to meets performance, weight, and functional requirements and oversee build of prototype and production Wind Drive Trains in the factory. Bachelor of Science degree in one of the major hard sciences and at least 3+ additional years of experience in an engineering position.
County Executive Mark DiVecchio and his team are considering moving over a thousand county employees to a four day work week. On this type of schedule, employees would work 10 hour days Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and have Fridays (or some other day) off. In other cities and businesses that have made this type of switch, there have been some cost savings, especially for employees saving money on gas, day care expenses and more. The plan is in its infancy and is no where near complete or approved yet, though some local unions support the idea.

Hey, like the weekend recap! When it is an especially nice weekend weatherwise, I am sure that many do not have a chance to read all the blogs. nice job. thanks.
“Erie’s only wind turbines – one at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and one on Presque Isle by the Stull Interpretive Center”
isn’t there also one located at the newly renovated J. S. Wilson Middle School?
They do have a rather small turbine and a small solar array as well. There’s no report of it actually generates a useful amount of energy though.
I did find a picture of the setup in this PDF file: http://www.aianwpa.org/2007_11.pdf
There is also one at the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies, behind the Blasco Library.
I’ll amend the post and do a new post this week on wind turbine locations in the county. If you know of any more, please let me know. Thanks everyone for the info.
Does anyone know the zoning laws about putting one of these mirco-turbines up in a residential neighborhood? I’ve seen small 10Kw turbines for around $700.00 which would be great for my house. I called both Millcreek, and Erie and neither could provide an answer.
Moski
call Building Inspection Underwriters (BIU) on Peach Street. you would need a zoning permit for anything built requiring excavation for a structural foundation.
