Erie Plastics in Corry is negotiating to be purchased. After laying off 192 employees this past March, they are looking to sell. The current suitor is Ed Crawford, CEO of Park Ohio Corporation. Following news of a govertment plan to support banks and other financial companies in the future, markets closed up on Friday. The Dow Jones was up 368.75 to close at 11,388.44. The NASDAQ closed up 74.80 to finish at 2,273.90. No word yet on how many trillions of dollars we taxpayers may be liable for. Your nest egg = stunned.
The new Under the Clock restaurant in the Boston Store is set to open Monday. They’ll be open for lunch and dinner and brunch on Sunday. A coffee shop is also set to open in the Boston Store in the next few weeks. Good to see more dining options downtown.
The Hilton Garden Inn is now open for business. Managed by Scott Enterprises, it is the 15th business they operate around the Peach and I-90 interchange. The hotel is next to the Courtyard by Marriott and Ambassador Conference Center. They will be connected by a glass walkway.

300 members of the National Guard 112th Infantry Division reported yesterday to the new Cambridge Springs Readiness Center. They will deploy next week to Mississippi, then to Iraq for 400 days. Good luck, be safe, and thank you for your service.
The Erie Downtown Partnership has created a gift certificate program for businesses in downtown Erie. 33 local establishments will accept the cards, which will be available in $10, $20, $50 or $100 increments. Three leading physical anthropologists in the Mercyhurst College Department of Applied Forensic Sciences today received an enormous boost in support of their research with the award of nearly $1 million in grants from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).
Following Thursday’s fight of nearly 100 kids, residents of that part of town are calling for more police officers. During Thursday’s incident, only 20 officers were able to respond to deal with what onlookers called “hundreds” of teens. Friday afternoon, more officers were stationed around East High School as a precaution. Expect the police union to use situations like this in their negotiations with the city.
Chad Munson of Girard waited his prelimary hearing on charges he broke into Central Tech, broke windows and streaked. He’s asking for probation and said he will pay to replace 18 windows that were broken.
Wesley Urch of Erie was found guilty by a jury in his trial for purposefully running down two people outside a local bar. One person was killed and another seriously injured. He will be sentenced November 5.
This week, a meeting was held to talk about the Parade Street redevelopment. While the group has some grant money, the low bid received for work was about $700,000 more then the group has. They will search for more money. Dale Hannah has more on this. The Erie Otters kicked off the 2008-09 campaign with a 4-0 loss to the London Knights. The Knights scored three third period goals to break open a close game on their way to a win played last night in front of 9,090 at the John Labatt Centre. Otters netminder Jaroslav Janus had 43 saves. The Otters are back at it tonight on the road against the Plymouth Whalers.

Erie non-profit group Therapy Dogs United, Inc., in conjunction with the American Kennel Club, will host the area’s only Responsible Dog Ownership Day at Frontier Park (north side) today from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, rain or shine. Event highlights include a Blessing of the Dogs, Parade of Breeds, agility demonstrations, special appearance by search and rescue dogs, K9 police units, and therapy dogs.
