The Logan Series “Music at Noon” kicks off its 19th season at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a lunchtime performance by Boston Brass. The performance takes place at noon on Thursday, September 25, in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Advertising Federation of Northwest Pennsylvania will hold its second annual Erie Ad Day, focusing on the theory, tactics and technologies driving the advertising and marketing communications industry, on Thursday, September 25. The full-day professional development event will be held at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel, 55 West Bay Drive in downtown Erie.
The Great Lakes Film Festival will run from September 25-28 and held at Theatre 145 (formerly the Road House) and will feature independent films from all over the world. With Special guests, filmmakers, scriptwriters, and meet and greets. Don’t miss out on the after parties with bands and receptions.
The Wine Country Harvest Festival, hosted by the North East Chamber of Commerce, will be held September 26-28. Expect a variety of music, food, arts & crafts, champagne breakfast, Cruise In, Children’s Area, winery tours, wagon rides, wine and food seminars, wine by the glass, and souvenirs. There will be 5 wineries in the wine tent this year, serving more than 40 varieties of wine, along with free shuttle service to the wineries and to other attractions in town.
Lake City Fire Company’s 6th annual “cruise-in” will be held Friday, September 26th from 5 – 9 p.m. at the fire station on Rice Avenue. There will be a BBQ rib dinner, hot dogs & chips.
The annual Rotary Blood Analysis Drive takes place at the Shriner’s Hospital on Saturday, September 27, 2008. It’s a low-cost alternative to having your blood tested to diagnose and monitor the your body’s response to diseases and detection of diseases including colon cancer. A blood test is typically $200 to $400.00 through your local physician, but only $25.70 on September 27th through the Rotary Blood Analysis program.
The Erie Art Museum has organized the first North American museum exhibition of East African textiles, opening September 27, 2008 in the Museum’s Main Gallery at 411 State Street. To celebrate the exhibit’s inauguration, the Museum will host guests from Kenya and Tanzania, who will be participating in a variety of public programming in October. A public opening reception is scheduled for Gallery Night Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 from 6-10 p.m. This community exhibition is sponsored by Gannon University.
The Erie Philharmonic will hold its opening night performance on Saturday, September 27, at 8 p.m. with the following musical selections: Daugherty: Oh Lois; Grieg: Piano Concerto, op 16, A minor with Antonio Pompa-Baldi on the piano; and Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5. The Erie Philharmonic, under the baton of conductor Daniel Meyer, will perform a free concert with special guest artist Alec Chien at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28 in Shafer Auditorium on the campus of Allegheny College. The concert, made possible in part through the generosity of Allegheny alumnus and trustee M. Peter Scibetta and his wife, Ellie, will be a special welcome to the community for Allegheny’s new president, James H. Mullen Jr., his wife, Mari, and their children, Franki and James.
October Events
Acclaimed stand-up comedian Bobby Collins is bringing his special brand of heartfelt humor from the comedy club scene to the stage of Pennsylvania’s Erie Playhouse. Collins will headline a special stand-up show at the Erie Playhouse at 8 p.m. Friday, October 3. Described as a “perfect fusion of Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis” (New York Post), Collins is known for his live performances, cable TV specials, numerous talk show appearances, feature film roles and comedy CDs. “Stand-Up Comedy Legend Bobby Collins” will be presented at the Erie Playhouse, 13 West 10th Street. The Hazel Kibler Museum in Girard is sponsoring a cemetery ghost walk October 3, 4, & 5 with tours at 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 p.m. and midnight. Please call (814) 774-3653 for reservations. Cost is $5.00.
The Roadhouse Theatre’s 20th Anniversary Production, ‘Buried Child’, will be performed October 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 with a special performance on October 19 for anyone who has ever performed in or worked on a Roadhouse Theatre production. Reservations will be required for this show and a reception will follow the performance. Tickets are $8 with special limited VIP seating available at $12. As usual BYOB with proper ID. The first Lindsay Graygo Memorial 5K Run/Walk will be held on October 4, 2008 at Beach One of Presque Isle. All proceeds of the run/walk will go to the Lindsay Graygo Empowerment Scholarship. Here’s a registration form [PDF].
The Directors Circle Theatre kicks off its 14th season with “Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean!” written by former Erie resident Ed Graczyk. The production, directed by Michael Weiss, will play Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM through October 4. Check the reservation line for possible matinee performances. The 13th annual Because You Care walk will be Sunday, October 5, 2008. The Annual Walk for Small Animals, as Because You Care’s largest fundraiser, provides funds needed for the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned and abused animals throughout BYC’s operating year. The funds from this Walk help to provide the necessary veterinary care (including spaying and neutering) and food and supplies to animals all year around. In addition to working for the cause, the Walk has also become one of BYC’s most fun and educational events. Walkers and dogs of all ages come out to partake in a carnival of pre- and post- walk events, stroll by educational stations, walk the beautiful Beach 11 area with dogs, and enjoy an after-walk lunch with door prizes and raffles. The Center for Political Participation at Allegheny College will host a debate for the candidates for U.S. Congress, Pennsylvania District 3, on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. in Ford Chapel. The 70-minute debate between Democratic candidate Kathy Dahlkemper and Republican candidate Phil English will be co-moderated by Allegheny College Professor of Political Science Daniel M. Shea and WSEE TV news anchor Jacqueline Policastro.

Belle Valley Fire Department presents their annual haunted house “Valley of the Ghouls.” The haunted house is open on October 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, and 31 from 7:30-11 pm and It’s $5 to get in.
The Her Times 5K Run/Walk benefiting SafeNet will be held on October 11 at Presque Isle State Park’s Rotary Pavilion. Proceeds from the race benefit SafeNet Domestic Violence Safety Network. The Halls of Fear, a haunted house attraction located in Wesleyville, is gearing up for another year of Halloween fun. The event is a fundraising project for the Wesleyville Hose Company, and is one of the areas best haunted house events. The Halls will begin Thursday, October 9th which is designated as a kids night. Beginning Friday, October 10th, the Halls will be for adults. Parking is located at the corner of Shannon & Station roads in Wesleyville. Unlike previous years, the Halls will be open for Halloween night. Here’s the full schedule: October 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 30 and 31. Open 7 – 10 p.m. weekdays, 7 – 11 pm on weekends, and open 9 – 12 Midnight on Halloween night.
The Erie County Historical Society will hold a Horse-Drawn Mystery Tour on Fridays, October 10, 17, & 24 at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tours depart from the Watson-Curtze Mansion at 356 West Sixth Street and will take a unique journey through downtown Erie, pausing at sites of spiritual unrest and bizarre happenstance (ECHS’s language, not ours). There will be a Professional Clothing Drive at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on October 13, 2008 from 12 PM to 3 PM in the Miller Building Gym. The purpose of the drive is to collect professional attire for students in need that will be doing junior field and student teaching in Edinboro University. There are so many teacher candidates this year, many who simply cannot afford the professional clothing that is required to go out in the work force. So, if anyone has extra professional clothing collecting dust in their closet – male and female, any sizes – give them away to a good cause and help some young adults and future educators out!
The Erie Zoo “ZooBoo” 2008 will run from Friday, October 17th through Tuesday, October 30th. The gates are open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. each night. Children 11 and under will receive a special bag and be able to trick-or-treat at various booths throughout the Zoo. There will also be a variety of Halloween displays, costumed characters, a spooky train ride, endangered species carousel, crafts, facepainting, and games.
