Last night two people were seriously injured when the motorcycle they were riding crashed on Route 8 near Wattsburg. Both riders were not wearing helmets.

The 14th annual Juvenile Diabetes Walk was held yesterday at Presque Isle. Organizers hoped to raise $250,000. You couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for a walk.

THE S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie have joined the long list of groups opposed to the tires-to-energy plant proposed for the former IP plant. They are concerned possible pollution would hamper the ongoing recovery of many fish species in the lake.

We posted on Saturday about the possible sale of Erie Plastics. The union is set to vote today on pay cuts and other concessions the buyer is demanding. The Roche family says they will receive no money for the sale, instead the companies debts will be paid off. It is hoped the new owner will keep the plant upon under a new name and keep the employees on. Last year Scott Rittenhouse was expelled from Gannon after child pornography was found on his laptop computer last year. In April, he pled guilty and will finally be sentenced later today on related charges.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has made it official, confirming Eli Borger of Palmerton, Pa., has broken the state record for catching the largest golden rainbow trout. Five months ago Borger caught the fish but was waiting for the official word from the commission. The the previous record of 11 pounds, 10 ounces was held by R. W. Hafer of Erie since 1986.

Amy “The Outlaw” Clemson starts the day as the new morning show host on 93.9 The Wolf, replacing Shannon Solo. Clemson was previously at Country 98. The Press and Tower has more.

Sports

The Erie Otters bounced back after an opening night loss to beat the Plymouth Whalers 6-1 on Saturday night and now have a record of 1-1. The Otters play the Guelph Storm this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. but return to Erie on Saturday to play the Kitchener Rangers. We would refer you to the Otters website for ticket information but it appears to have last been updated for the 2006-07 season. Seriously.

College Football: Penn State crushed Temple University 45-3 and is now ranked 12th in the nation. Penn State won’t face some real competition until the second week of October when it faces the University of Wisconsin. Edinboro lost to the California Univeristy of Pennsylvania with a close score of 35-31. Gannon lost to Slippery Rock 24-16. The Mercyhurst Lakers beat Clarion 41-7. The University of Pittsburgh beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 21-20.

NFL: The Buffalo Bills just narrowly beat the Oakland Raiders 24-23. Cleveland Browns lost to the Baltimore Ravens 28-10. In the Pennsylvania Bowl, the Steelers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 15-6. Only Buffalo remains undefeated out of the three local favorites.

MLB: The Cleveland Indians owned Detroit beating the Tigers 6-3 on Saturday and 10-5 Sunday making it a series sweep. The Tribe is finally about .500 for the first time since May. Sounds a bit too little too late. The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Houston Astros on Saturday 6-4 but lost Sunday 6-2.

Events

This Saturday a new exhibit opens at the Erie Art Museum. Beginning this Saturday, September 27 through March 2009, the museum will feature the first North American museum exhibition of East African textiles and will host guests from Kenya and Tanzania, who will be participating in a variety of events scheduled in October. Admission is $10 per person with a free public opening reception is scheduled for Gallery Night Friday, October 10, 2008 from 6 – 10 p.m.

Ladies, here is an opportunity to impress your man. There will be a two-day women only Steelhead workshop at Presque Isle State Park, October 10-11, 2008. On Friday participants will learn the history of steelhead, biology and behavior, gear and equipment for catching steelhead, current regulations, fish consumption advisories, and how to clean and prepare you fish for consumption. On Saturday participants will demonstrate casting and rigging techniques, and fish for steelhead. Ages 12 and up with a registration fee of $20.00. To register call (814) 844-7424 or email.
