The smoking ban continues to cause confusion and some anger, especially at Edinboro University. The university, along with all the schools in the state higher education system have banned all smoking – not just indoors but outdoors as well, meaning pretty much anywhere on campus. The faculty union is up in arms, as is the community – especially those people nearby campus. It seems students and staff are merely walking across the street and off-campus to smoke, leaving butts and trash on people’s private property. Enough people complained to the school and the administration was forced to send an email to all faculty and staff. Part of it reads:
You might not be aware of it, but such littering violates borough ordinance, while also defying environmental etiquette requiring proper disposal of smoking materials. Another municipal issue involving the proper extinguishing and disposal of smoking materials is the danger of fire as dry leaves accumulate during the Autumn months.
They also say further problems may lead to citations from borough police, followed up with a reminder that Edinboro has smoking cessation classes. If you missed it earlier this week, we had an exclusive op-ed with Kelly Kidd, program manager for the NWPA Tobacco Control Program.
If you’ve been trying to get WQLN over the air, keep trying. In an email sent out by the organization last evening, they confirmed they are still off the air and have no ETA when they will be broadcasting again. They’ve posted a FAQ page and photos of antenna damage. When asked when they might be back online, the answer was “Our best estimate at this time is that WQLN may be able to return to normal operations in November or at the latest early December.” When they do come back online, they will only be broadcasting digitally. If you have a newer TV with a digital tuner or one of the new set-top boxes, you’ll be all set. Viewers who subscribe to cable will notice no difference.

Kathy Dahlkemper held a press conference yesterday at a local County Fair, promoting her energy plan and criticizing Phil English. She also handed out 20 CITGO gift cards. Steven Porter, who’s still not on the ballot, was critical of the event, questioning the ethics of giving out the gas cards. Today, Porter will submit his ballot re-instatement case to the PA Supreme Court.
Speaking of campaigns, would anyone working with the English campaign please shoot Mike an email. There is not 1 contact email on your site. What’s the deal with that?
