Erie PA News and Events for the Weekend of October 4, 2008

Erie Renewable Energy has submitted a new emissions plan to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Don’t expect a permit from the DEP for many months as they review all the information. There is considerable resistance to the plant locally.

The US House of Representatives passed the “Bailout Bill” yesterday. The plan was signed by President Bush. Rep. Phil English (R) voted against the plan. He noted in a statement he released:

The challenges facing our financial markets are real and Congress should have engaged in a deliberative process to craft a measured response that put the taxpayer front and center. Instead, the Congress considered a bill today which, nearly identical to its previous version, contained the same flawed framework to which I strongly objected on Monday.

Rep. John Peterson (R) voted for the package. He said this:

As I stated earlier this week and I will say again today, this was one of the toughest votes of my legislative career. The legislation that I supported today, and was adopted by the House of Representatives, is not perfect and by no means will solve the financial crisis over night. However, the rescue package will inject much needed capital into the economy, allowing consumers to regain confidence in the market and eventually rebound from the disastrous effects of the subprime mortgage meltdown.

Unfortunately we’re seeing the effects of a down economy locally. The corporation that owns the building used by East Erie Turners has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The East Erie Turners will continue to operate in the building. We have also received reports of layoffs at Velocity Network, which was named 2008 Technology Business of the Year by the Gannon University Small Business Development Center.

Erie County Controller Sue Weber is claiming that one of the positions being cut in her office is due to retaliation by the County Executive, who denies the accusations. Weber has brought up several issues in the past two years. The position is one of 44 proposed to be cut in the next county budget.

Erie City Council has agreed to spend $22,000 to fund some tests that are needed at Erie Golf Course so that it can be transferred. The tests should be completed in a few weeks. The Course will be transferred to Millcreek’s control as part of the airport runway extension project. The course has been closed.

Erie’s first pet park opens today. The large fenced-in area will have 4,000 square feet of pure doggie goodness. The park located at Horstman and Sons at 26th and Powell Avenue.

Edinboro University has broken ground on a new Human Services building. The $5 million project will give new homes to the nursing, speech, language and hearing departments. The building will also include a new preschool program for children with language development issues.

LORD Corporation has been awarded a contract for the Cessna Model 850 Citation Columbus large cabin intercontinental business jet. LORD will provide the engine and APU isolation system for the Columbus business jet from its plants in Erie and Dayton, Ohio. Good news.

Local photographer John Huegel will be conducting a family portrait photography marathon on Sunday October 19th at Presque Isle State Park.
100% of the session fees will be donated to the Baker Family to help address medical bills. In the summer of 2008, Scot Baker was severely injured in a motorcycle accident. Though recovering slowly, he is still in need of extensive rehabilitation, and the family’s medical bills continue to increase.

Sports

WSEE will broadcast today’s Gannon-Edinboro game live at 2 p.m.

McDowell senion A.J. Fenton broke the school’s career rushing record last night. With a fair number of games still to go, we think he’ll put a lot of room between himself and the pack. Mike’s a McDowell grad and is happy for fellow Trojan Fenton, who will head to Wisconsin next fall.

Ryan Hayes and Chris Terry each scored two goals to lead the Plymouth Whalers to a 5-4 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 2,811 at the Tullio Arena. Erie takes on London tonight at 7 p.m.
