Erie PA News and Events for Columbus Day–Monday, October 13, 2008

Santa MariaToday is Columbus Day, a day when we celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492.  Can you name the three ships Columbus led to the Americas?  Courts, public schools, many banks, and the Post Office will be closed today, so no Netflix discs for you.

Congrats to Greg Ropp and everyone at the Eerie Horror Festival for another great event – one that draws in visitors from all over the country and in turn bringing revenue to downtown.

Ed Palatella has a good story on a $30,000 payment received by a City of Erie zoning official that coincided with a vote on a pre-release center downtown being operaged by Greg Rubino. The official, Jeffrey J. Johnson, received $30,000 from Tecnica Development Corporation which is owned by…wait for it…Greg Rubino. Rubino claims it was an “advance” on future real estate purchases. Johnson never reported the money to the zoning board, of which he was the chair, nor on state ethics forms.

Lawrence Lessig, one of the preeminent scholars on copyright law, published an essay titled “In Defense of Piracy” in the Wall Street Journal this past Saturday.  In the essay, Lessig discusses Erie blogger Eden’s encounter and subsequent lawsuit against Universal Music Group regarding her posting of a video of her son dancing to music by Prince on YouTube.

A chemical leak of sulfuric acid (a.k.a oleum) leaked into the air from the Indspec Chemical Corporation plant in Petrolia, PA, which is just east of Grove City.  At least 2,000 residents of Petrolia were affected by the leak.

State Representative Daryl Metcalfe of Cranberry, Pa., was criticized for spending state money to defend his character against claims he belonged to a white supremacist group based in Erie.  As it turns out, no one can find this group in Erie, however, they may want to check adjacent Warren County.

Antonio Warner, 29, has been arrested after allegedly keeping a woman in her car for over 5 hours and repeatedly raping her. This all took place in alley in the 1000 block of East Avenue. From the Erie Times-News:

The woman told police the man fell asleep while he was on top of her and whenever she would attempt to move, he would wake up and begin assaulting her again.

Warner faces charges including rape, sexual assualt, and more. He remains in jail on a $50,000 bond.

In what we suspect is going to be a trend, local, non-chain restaurants are beginning to close, claiming a bad economy is forcing them out of business. The latest closings include the Crossbow Inn in Cambridge Springs and The Driftwood Restaurant in Linesville. It’s sad to see these locally owned businesses close up. Other establishments are adapting, like the Yellow Dog Lantern restaurant in Oil City. They’re an upscale place that has started a “recession menu,” featuring $10 entrees from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

If you were planning on taking a drive in the country side to view the changing color of the leaves, you better do it fast.  This is going to be the week to do it.

Sports

The Erie Otters just can’t catch a break.  The Otters lost on Saturday to the Barrie Colts 5-1 at the Barrie Molson Centre.   The Otters are now 2-6-1-0 for the season and will be at home on Wednesday night.

NFL: The Cleveland Browns host defending Super Bowl champions the New York Giants tonight on Monday Night Football. The game starts at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN. Pittsburgh and Buffalo were both off this week.

In college football, it’s the season many Penn Staters have been waiting for (and continue to keep their fingers crossed).  PSU beat Wisconsin during Saturday night’s game 48-7 and are now ranked #3 in the nation with a season record of 7-0.  Pitt was off for the weekend.

Other college scores:
Mercyhurst 35 Gannon 32
(18) Edinboro 24  (16) IUP 17
Carnegie Mellon 41 Allegheny 14
