Erie PA News and Events for Tuesday, October 14, 2008

WICU reported on the validity of rumors circulating that the community activist organization known as ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) has been engaging in voter fraud in Erie County.  According to WICU, ACORN has not had a presence in Erie for the last 15 months and the Erie County Elections Office has stated it has had no encounters with the group.

Kathy Dahlkemper and Phil English debated last evening in Sharon, Pa. at the Sharon City Hall.  Election day is 3 weeks away.

As much as we cringe when we hear terms like “Wall Street to Main Street,” woes in the financial markets may have an effect on Erie County’s 2009 budget. Some of the pension funds are invested in stocks and we’ve all seen the beating they’ve taken lately, despite yesterday’s record gain.  The fund must be fully funded, and the County could be on the hook for the difference. Next year’s budget also calls for 44 job cuts.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission voted to allow staff to pursue the purchase of three properties along Elk Creek.  The idea is to greater access to fishing by opening up more than 1 1/2 miles of stream access along Elk Creek.  The property acquisitions are funded through the sale of fishing permits.

Fox 66 is now broadcasting at full power on their digital signal. If you have a digital TV set or one of those converter boxes, you’ll receive the channel at its intended strength. It would behoove Jet to start broadcasting in HD before Lost starts again in the new year. Just sayin’.

The Greystone Group, which includes Scott Enterprises of Erie, announced last month it was purchasing Buffalo’s historic Statler building but has since faced a number of obstacles.   In just the past three weeks, over $150,000 in liens have been filed with the State of New York against the entity that currently owns the building (those liens would have priority over Greystone’s subsequent purchase of the building).   Chris Scott, V.P. of Scott Enterprises, was quoted in the Buffalo News as saying, “This will be a massive undertaking, a real monster, but it’s a fantastic building that holds enormous potential.”

William F. McCarthy and Robert Blakely have been named the recipients of the 2008 James V. Kinnane Criminal Justice Award, sponsored by Mercyhurst College. They will receive their awards at the 35th Annual James V. Kinnane Awards Luncheon and Criminal Justice Conference on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Ambassador Banquet & Conference Center.

Farmers from Erie and Crawford counties are at the end of their first season of growing the plant camelina, which wil be sent to a crushing plant in Erie County and then processed into biofuels.  Lake Erie Biofuels and the Penn State Cooperative Extension are promoting the project to test the viability of producing the plant for biofuel production.  It takes about 8 pounds of camelina oil to produce one gallon of biodiesel.

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the first cell phone call. Compare that giant phone in a bag to today’s iPhones and Blackberry devices. Amazing.  Our favorite cell phone antique?  The Motorola 550, a.k.a. the “brick” which doubles as a paperweight… or a door stopper.

Gas prices continue to fall right in line with the slumping market.  The lowest price that can be found in the Erie area is $2.99.  However, with yesterday’s market rally (Dow Jones up 936 points), $2 gasoline may not be here for very long.

Sports

The Cleveland Browns beat defending Super Bowl champion New York 35-14. Derek Anderson had 310 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Browns are now 2-3. The Browns travel to Washington to face the Redskins next Sunday. Game time is 4:15 p.m.

The Erie Otters play at home tomorrow night against the Niagara IceDogs.  Game time is 7 p.m. and you can purchase tickets or listen to the game online live.

The Gannon wrestling team is ranked ninth in the initial NCAA Division II East regional rankings released Monday afternoon. In addition, five Golden Knights were listed among the top wrestlers within the region.

The Rhythms of Life Series at Penn State Behrend presents the Calpulli Mexican Dance Company featuring the music and dances of Mexico. The performance is Tuesday, October 14 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Reed Union Building.

The Girard-Lake City Chamber of Commerce will hold a “Meet the Candidate” luncheon with 3rd District Congressional incumbent Representative Phil English. The event will be held at Hunter Jacks Restaurant with a buffet style lunch will be served promptly at noon, cost is $8.00 per person. Dr. David Kozak, professor of public policy and director of the Institute for Policy and Leadership Studies at Gannon University, will hold a forum exploring where the candidates stand on some of today’s most important issues at a presentation at Mercyhurst North East. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the Alex Theater on the MNE campus. Call (814) 725-6277 for more information.

Allegheny College alumni John Sutphen, class of ‘78, and Cris Schwarz, class of ‘02, will present a lecture titled “The Case for Proactive Change in a Reactive World” on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in Room 101 of Quigley Hall. The presentation will highlight recent discoveries of organic pollutants –pharmaceuticals and pesticides – in public water supplies and discuss possible approaches, either reactive or proactive, to finding solutions for this environmental problem.
