I write this for those who cannot speak but only express their emotions through heartfelt eyes and painful shrieks that can be heard behind the scenes of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. I urge you not only to refrain from allowing yourself or your child to be consumed by this “newly marketed” cruelty, but also to become informed about the inhumane practices of these companies.
The precious dollars you will be reaching into your pockets to spend on this entertainment should be used toward something that does not involve the exploitation of animals that have no choice in the performance slavery that has become their life.
For those of you who will take your seat to engage in this spectacle, I ask you to take the time as you “enjoy the show” to find the eyes of the animals you are exploiting and peer into the pain they must endure as they travel hundreds of miles chained, caged and displayed as they were not intended to be.
It is of importance to note that the countries of Sweden, Austria, Costa Rica, India, Finland, and Singapore have all banned or restricted the use of animals in entertainment—it’s time for the United States to do the same.
Dr. Desmond Morris, anthropologist and author states it best, "The idea that it is funny to see wild animals coerced into acting like clumsy humans, or thrilling to see powerful beasts reduced to cringing cowards by a whip-cracking trainer is primitive and medieval.”
