The trial for Michael Joyce, who was indicted on multiple counts of mail fraud and money laundering, is moving ahead. During yesterday’s trial, prosecutors told the jury Joyce made fraudulent insurance claims in order to settle a debt with a former fiancee. Joyce’s attorney countered that the prosecution’s case is built around “a vicious, jilted woman” who is an “architect from hell.”  If you want in on the action, you’ll have to drive to Pittsburgh where the trial is taking place.

Senator Arlen Specter will be holding an open house meeting today on the campus of Allegheny College at 10 a.m. this morning. Senator Specter will address the audience briefly and devote the remainder of the hour to responding to residents’ questions and concerns. Mike will be getting video of this event. Phil English and Kathy Dahlkemper square off for one last debate before the election. The debate will be broadcast on WQLN TV and WJET as well as WQLN-FM. at 7 p.m.  At 8 p.m. WQLN FM will air a roundtable discussion with moderator Kim Young and featuring Kevin Flowers of the Erie Times-News, Sean Laffery of WJET and Marsha Mackinnon of WSEE.

City of Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott held a townhall meeting yesterday afternoon at the Sarah Reed retirement center. The chief of police and the fire department joined him to hear the concerns of citizens.

Next Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m., hit up your local Taco Bell for a free taco. There was a stolen base in last night’s World Series game so that means free tacos for everyone. Make a run for the border, then the bathroom.

The Arts Council of Erie has changed their name to ArtsErie and they have a new slogan: “Imagine what we can create.” In the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the ArtsErie distributed over half a million dollars in grants to local artists and programs.

Erin Howard, 26, of Corry was sentenced to two years and 11 months to nine years and two months in prison for involuntary manslaughter and other charges. She was the wheel when her car crashed, killing her 6-year-old son. You may remember Howard went to the bar after her son’s funeral instead of returning to prison. When her jail time is up, she’ll serve three years of probation.

More layoffs could be coming, this time at National City. After a bad quarter, the bank has announced it will lay off 4,000 employees. No word on what affect this will have on branches in Erie and Crawford Counties.

Despite authorizing a strike on Tuesday, Iroquois School District teachers remain on the job and say a strike is not imminent.

Pennsylvania is shaping up to be a key battleground state, and increasingly so as election day draws near.  The McCain campaign has made it clear that although no Republican presidential candidate has won the state in 20 years, Pennsylvania will remain a primary concern up to election day. 

The Pittsburgh area television market is getting a taste of the race for the 3rd congressional district. Since part of the district in which Dahlkemper and English are campaigning, political advertising has been purchased and aired on Pittsburgh stations most notably an attack ad against Phil English by the Democratic Party.  KDKA has video.

Dr. William G. Glecos, a general dentist from Erie, announced his candidacy for the position of President-Elect of the American Dental Association (ADA) during its annual meeting in San Antonio on Tuesday of this week.  Best of luck to Dr. Glecos who has been in private practice in Erie since 1977!

The first of a fleet of 50 new mobile counseling centers for the Department of Veterans Affairs Vet Center program was put into service today with the remainder scheduled to be activated over the next three months. The 38-foot motor coaches, which have spaces for confidential counseling, will carry Vet Center counselors and outreach workers to events and activities to reach veterans in broad geographic areas. Each vehicle will be assigned to one of VA’s existing Vet Centers, enabling the center to bring counseling services closer to veterans. One of those new mobile counseling centers will be based in Erie at the VA hospital on E. 38th and Old French.

Sports

The Phillies beat the Rays last night in game one of the World Series.

The Erie Otters play on the road tonight against the Niagara IceDogs. The Otters are home Friday against the Saginaw Spirit and Saturday against the Kitchener Rangers.

The No. 23 Mercyhurst men’s soccer team fell 2-1 in a PSAC West contest at Slippery Rock Wednesday.

The Penn State Behrend men’s soccer team entered today’s contest having won four of its last five games and continued the trend beating Hilbert 3-0. With the victory, Behrend moved to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the conference.

The Allegheny College men’s cross country team fell seven spots to 20th in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national poll. The Gators were ranked 13th before finishing fifth at the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble.

The Fairview women’s soccer team has won the Region 3 titile, beating Harborcreek. Both teams still will be in the District 10 playoffs, which start next week.

Events

The next exhibit at Cummings Gallery brings together works by three professional artists who work with two-dimensional surfaces. Titled “Defining Edge: Kerr + Bush + Stunden,” the show opens with a reception Thursday, Oct. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Greater Erie Area Habitat for Humanity and the Greater Erie Board of Realtors are holding a Monopoly Party tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Bel-Aire Hotel. Tickets are $25 each and will benefit Habitat for Humanity. Call (814) 454-7025 for information.

From 4-8 p.m. today, the Sassafras Street Hair Company & Day Spa will hold a fundraiser to benefit the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.  All future hair and spa appointments scheduled, as well as products purchased at this event will result in 15% of the proceeds donated to the fund.  The Hair Company is located at 3628 Maple Street.  Call (814) 868-2807 for information.

On October 26 there will be a EGBA Candidate Forum (Zone Dance Club, 133 W 18th St, Erie, PA) at 7 PM. The forum is organized by Erie Gay Business Alliance. Candidates will be speaking about issues relevant to our community.

Gem City Concert Band will present a fall concert Thursday, November 6, at the Blasco Library’s H.O. Hirt Auditorium. The hour-and-half-long program will begin at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public, although a free-will offering will be accepted to benefit Gem City Bands.
