Alaksa Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin will be in Erie for a campaign event on October 30.

Palin will spend several days in Pennsylvania, making stops in Reading and Hershey.

As the time of the event and the location are announced, we’ll update you. President Bush also campaigned in Erie in 2004.

The most recent SurveyUSA poll has Obama up in Pennsylvania by 13.

It figures, I'll be out of town!

  3. david says:

thanks for making erie look no so smart…….
i believe you mean “sell it”

  4. Barry08 says:

There are several grammar and spelling errors in the post, ya know..

Sarah Palin will not be ready to be President for a long time, if ever. We need LESS ideology in the White House, not more!

  5. ErieBlogs says:

Easy with the grammar/spelling criticisms. It's borderline ad hominem and we would like to keep things civil–regardless of political preference.

  6. Will says:

I don't think that grammar and spelling criticism is out of bounds by any stretch. I found this blog through Google, and I'm sure a lot of others might as well. Do we really need to paint our town as being uneducated?

  7. Ray D. says:

    Barry08,

Whats with the rays of sunshine or whatever coming out of Barack's head? Do you think he's the Messiah or something?

Sarah Palin is a smart woman, and has learned the ropes quickly. She has done great work in Alaska, which may be why she is among the most popular governors.

She also seems a lot less ideological that Barack Obama, who has radical leftist connections in the USA (Bill Ayers) and has campaigned for a socialist (Raila Odinga) in Kenya who happened to be a member of his father's tribal group.

  8. Barry08 says:

Messiah? Really. I looked for a monochrome picture and that's what I found.

Sarah Palin's Record stands for itself. Some people may have positive opinions of her, but the majority of Americans do not believe she is ready to serve. Even Repubs name her as the biggest drag on the McCain ticket.

And I'm so tired of hearring about Ayers. This has been dragged around, back and forth and is just one more of the Right's scare tactic talking points. Aren't Conservatives tired of being frightened by their politicians?

Read this link to find the truth of the “connection” and the McCain campaign justification for using the spin “radical”. Hint: they completely alter the context it was originally used in.

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/stateme...
The McCain campaign cited several pieces of evidence for that allegation, including a 1995 invitation from the foundation for applications from schools “that want to make radical changes in the way teachers teach and students learn.” The campaign appears to have confused two different definitions of the word “radical.” Clearly the invitation referred to “a considerable departure from the usual or traditional,” rather than “advocating extreme measures to retain or restore a political state of affairs.”

  9. Melissa says:

Hey, hey, Erie! McCain/Palin are coming to my town first (tomorrow!) Beat ya!

I think the county is already predominantly Democrat, but nonetheless, they'll be in Quakertown campaigning tomorrow. Some people I know have a pretty good seat, but I'll be at work. Even though I'm not voting for them, I'd still be curious to attend and hear what they have to say.

Guys, come on, grow up. EB printed an upcoming event in an unbiased way. Just…get over it. They're going to campaign whether you like them or no.

  10. LionTamer says:

PEOPLE YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ABOUT ALL OF THIS!!

Everything from Obama's group of people he was/is associated with, to his and his wife's questionable “Patriotism”, to the fact that some on the left are calling him the “Messiah” (this scares the wits out of me), to his socialistic thinking, to the fact that he HAS supported bills that would BAN popular sporting guns/ammo (never forget what Canada and England had going through).
Simply put…after they take your guns…the crime rate increases…(SURPRISE)!!??

  11. Tom says:

    Yay Sarah!

  12. Andrew says:

Barry 08 is just another Kool-Aid drinker who has given up on America. Socialism is not what made this the greatest country in the world in less than 200 years. It's a pity so many people have given up on freedom & liberty, wanting nothing more than government to take care of them from cradle to grave in exchange.

  13. mark says:

Some big wig long ago said we will invade you from with in. It would look like the answerer to your needs!Just don't understand every buddy with blinders on.

  14. Rich says:

Sarah has executive experience and Obama Hussen has what? Oh thats right, ties to Islam.

  15. Barry08 says:

The last 8 years saw the American People lose a record number of freedoms and liberties under “Executive Privilege”. I don't understand how the same people who trumpet freedom so much totally fall lockstep with the Bush administration policies that totally disregard the Constitution.

  16. Barry08 says:

Sarah Palin governed fewer citizens than live in the Erie television market. This in no way qualifies her to hold the highest office in the land.

  17. stan says:

Do you have a list of those 'lost freedoms'?

I'm just curious what they are considering I seem to be living life with the exact same freedoms I had 8 years ago.

I think I missed the memo.

  18. Barry08 says:

I like how the right seems to believe they get to define “patriotism”, and the right seems to be the only ones using the word “messiah” as well–all a part of their desperate smear attacks since they know focusing on the issues will only hurt them.

Barack Obama supports the state right to regulate guns, much the same way things have been and are now. He is a Constitutional attorney and recognizes the right to keep and bear arms.

  19. stan says:

Well, then, its a good thing McCain is running for president and she isn't.

As for your other claim, time for a fact check, or as I like to call it: Reality.

    Television market:
Nielsen Designated Market Area; Erie Pa population – 157,830 (142nd out of 210 DMAs in the US)

Radio market (just for a good measure):
Arbitron Radio Market; Erie Pa population – 237,400 (169th out of 302 Arbitron market areas in the US)

Just for the hell of it, here's Erie County's population in 2000:
280,843 courtesy of the US Census.

    Population of Alaska:
626,932 in 2000; according the US Census
670,053 2006 estimate, also courtesy of the US Census.

So, it looks to me that you have no idea what you are talking about in terms of demographics and relative population sizes.

Also, no matter how small you incorrectly think Alaska is by population, it is still is a higher number than the number of citizens Obama has governed over, which at last count was STILL zero (0).

Here's my list of sources, which is something someone does when quoting numerical facts:

    Nielson numbers:
    http://www.nielsenmedia.com/nc/nmr_static/docs/...

    Arbitron numbers:
    http://www.arbitron.com/radio_stations/mm001050...

Alaska and Erie County Census information:
    http://factfinder.census.gov
select 'Alaska' under where it says 'State' for Alaska
or 'Erie' where it says 'City' and Pennsylvania where it says 'State'

PS – finding the info took me all of 5 minutes, most which was taking the time to actually READ it.

  20. Barry08 says:

You are wrong. The number is 157,000+ households.

    http://www.lostremote.com/2007/08/23/new-nielse...

I did take the time to read, and comprehend

  21. Moski says:

FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION: Government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity to assist terror investigations.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION: Government has closed once-public immigration hearings, has secretly detained hundreds of people without charges, and has encouraged bureaucrats to resist public records questions.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH: Government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they tell anyone that the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation.

RIGHT TO LEGAL REPRESENTATION: Government may monitor federal prison jailhouse conversations between attorneys and clients, and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes.

FREEDOM FROM UNREASONABLE SEARCHES: Government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation.

RIGHT TO A SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIAL: Government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.

RIGHT TO LIBERTY: Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them.

  22. Heavy_D says:

How many people did Obama govern? NONE. He's a legislator, one of 100. Fortunately to make the choice easier he's the least experienced of the 100 Senators and the most liberal.

  23. Pete says:

I support Obama, but geez, we should ease up on each other here. Everyone has their own reasons for supporting either ticket, we should respect each other's reasons as neither is right or wrong – no matter what you think. Hopefully everyone will get through the crap/lies (from BOTH sides) and vote on whomever best represents what they believe.

It'll be nice to see the area and the convention center get a bit of national attention. I hope all goes well, good luck getting a ticket, stay warm and I hope everyone can remain civil. Hopefully we won't see one of these representing Erie…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKUovpF9LWU

  24. D says:

And what exactly has Obama done that makes him qualified? Oh that's right…nothing beside support the terrorists in this country…so if you want to be blown up and turn socialistic, then by all means, vote Obama. But to talk about inexperience with respect to Sarah Palin when your an Obama supporter? Are you nuts? Palin has passed more things in her state in two years that Obama has done in a longer period of time. You, as well as all democrats, have absolutely no room to discredit Palin due to inexperience when you plan on voting for someone even more experienced.

  25. J says:

On the topic of governing the public: McCain has also governed ZERO as he too is a legislator and one of 100 in the Senate. As far as Obama being the most liberal senator that is also incorrect. While some interest group ratings might rank Obama as the most liberal senator, it is usually because he was unable to vote in many of the votes the interest group is using to rank the members of Congress. Anyone who is informed about Congress and has spent any time watching or studying the branch could easily say that Senators such as Feingold and Sanders are much more liberal than Obama.

In regard to socialism, socialism is simply when government controls the means of production and distribution of capital, land, etc. So under the basic definition of socialism, libraries are socialist and so are roads since the government owns and operates them and they are distributed relatively equal (toll roads excluded). Even the McCain camp has argued for some socialism in calling for the federal government to buy people's mortgages in light of the mortgage crisis. So rather than spewing sound bites from Fox news or pick your favorite conservative media source, perhaps the debate would be much more fruitful if individuals actually took a good look at their country and realized that it actually operates under a mixture of capitalistic and socialist principles.

  26. Heavy D says:

Senator McCain has executive experience as a squadron Commander in the Navy. It's a CEO Position of about 10 aircraft and 60 to 100 crew. You know like a small business. BUT even if it were true that he had none you are simply underscoring your candidate's NONE. How many times has 'the great uniter' Obama crossed party lines? NONE, McCain became famous crossing party lines!

On Socialism: If You read the Constitution you won't find ANYTHING about spreading the wealth. I would have thought a Harvard Constitutional scholar would have learned that the government's job is not to provide for people. It's job is to provide the opportunity for people. BIG DIFFERENCE. You know: ” life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness” not happiness or anything else.

Taking money from the group who makes it and giving it to a group who doesn't make it is much different than taking money from the group who makes it and giving it to everyone. ( Like your road example, the tax payers who paid for it can drive on them too) The government has responsibility to provide certain things for the CITIZENS of the US as outlined in the Constitution, universal health care is not one of them. A Strong national defense and secure border is.

  27. J says:

That's simply your opinion that it is not government's job to provide health care for its citizens. The Constitution says nothing about whether it is the government's job to provide roads, libraries, health care, etc. And funny you don't respond to McCain's call for the federal government to buy people's mortgages. Is it government's job to buy bad mortgages from people who cannot afford them? In my opinion, that's the most socialist measure that has been offered in this election.

Also, in regard to McCain crossing party lines. While the media has liked to portray McCain as someone who is willing to work on both sides of the aisle, the truth is that he has had to in order to do anything in the Senate. As someone who has worked in the U.S. Senate, I can speak from experience when I say that he is quite unpopular with his fellow Republican senators and also most of the Democratic senators. His biggest claim to crossing the aisle is the BCRA which he mainly slapped his name on. Feingold's office was the primary creator and now is the primary defender of this bill. So the idea that as president McCain would be able to unite the parties is ridiculous. He will be facing an uncooperative Senate on both sides of the aisle and McCain has already demonstrated that negotiating is not his strong suit.

  28. Heavy_D says:

Simply my opinion? Are you kidding?!!! Check the CONSTITUTION! if your party can find the “right” to abortion I am sure you can tell me where the Universal Health Care clause is! Your argument is false; because some of it is allowed doesn't mean all of it is allowed. ( federal works that is)

The idea for the Federal Mortgage buy out is terrible. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac ( created by FDR!) are terrible creations! There are 5 Million bad mortgages given to ILLEGAL ALIENS that we 'have” to bail out. I oppose McCain on this, but that doesn't mean he isn't the better choice. McCain is the paper cut compared to Obama being a sucking chest wound, if I have to choose one or the other I'll pick McCain.

So you don't like McCain on what he crossed the aisle on? Obama didn't do ANY bi-partisan stuff but he's the Unifier? McCain never laid claim to Unifying the country. The country has never been unified ever! Politically we have always had 2 sides believing 2 different things about the role of federal government.

McCain is no where near the perfect candidate but he is SO much better than Obama it's amazing that people have trouble seeing it.

OOPS , no it's not: people are being spoon fed Obama by just about every media outlet in the country! ( I'm sure you'll mention Fox News again in your response)

  29. J says:

I'm not saying that because some of it is allowed then all of it is allowed. If you re-read my statement that's not what I said. I'm simply pointing out that the government involves itself in many aspects of life that are not spelled out in the Constitution. I was just curious from your conservative standpoint exactly which services the government should offer and which ones they should not. Your earlier criteria that government is to provide opportunity for people is quite vague. One could argue that providing health care for people gives them the opportunity to continue to live and pursue happiness just like providing roads gives people the opportunity to travel and providing libraries gives people the opportunity to read.

The statement that Obama didn't do anything bipartisan is incorrect. In fact, when he served in the Illinois state senate he was known for repeatedly crossing the aisle in a senate that was long dominated by Republicans. For example, Obama spearheaded the effort for campaign finance reform in Illinois (one of the most politically corrupt states) and was able to work an agreement between the two parties. Obama also was able to broker a compromise between law enforcement groups and the ACLU to get legislation passed that would limit racial profiling on police stops. Also, there is a difference between claiming to unify the country (a claim George W. Bush made) and claiming to be able to work with members of Congress from both political parties (the claim I think Obama is making).

I don't think people are being spoon-fed Obama any more than they were spoon-fed George W. Bush in 2004 and 2000 and any other president taking the lead in the polls even earlier. In regard to Fox News, Fox News stories and polling have been quite nice to Obama considering its extreme conservative slant. I suppose real conservatives have had to turn to Limbaugh for their news this election; the spokesmen of moral values, especially with his three divorces and addiction to painkillers.

Individuals in this country have different priorities and different goals they want government to meet and they express this when they go vote. I think it's funny you find it “amazing” that people have trouble seeing McCain is the better candidate. I can see why someone such as yourself would find McCain the better candidate. I can also see why I personally find Obama the better candidate.

  30. Heavy_D says:

Article 1 section 8 of the US Constitution enumerates a lsit of powers, http://www.usconstitution.net/xconst_A1Sec8.html. This includes SPECIFICALLY the power to create roads. You said 2 posts previously the Constitution doesn't grant that power. Your are wrong on a main point of your arguement. Not an opinion in being wrong, but a factual error about a main point of our discussion. Therefore because of your lack of knowledge on an easily verifiable fact ( and that your argued strongly from a this false position) I must conclude you know nothing about the Constituion and the powers of government.

If you believe the media lavished positive coverage on Bush in 2000, release of DUI information the weekend before the election and in 2004 Dan Rather using documents that had been proven forgeries to attack Bush's National Guard service, you are terribly misguided.

Personal attacks on Rush Limbaugh ( pain killers? Really, nothing about Howard Dean the DNC chair being an alcoholic?) are so sad. Having an addiction doesn't make many of his opinions wrong. You resort to name calling and personal attacks because you have no factual basis to stand on. Resorting to name calling and personal attacks are hallmarks of a weak and flawed arguement.

I understand that people have different goals: Obama is saying if you make less than $250,000 a year I'll take from those that do and gived it to you. He said ” SPREAD THE WEALTH” I am familiar with Constitution ( and I have proven you aren't) I can tell you spread the wealth isn't in it. But since there are many more people who make under $250 K who want free stuff from those who do I can understand why Obama is getting so much support. In 2001 Obama said it was a “tragedy” that the court didn't do more to reditribute wealth in the US. He was a Constitutional Scholar at Harvard, he knows this isn't in the Constituion, but he also knows his supporters (like you) don't.

  31. J says:

If you actually read the enumerated powers in the Constitution then you would see that it allows for postal roads to be built (not a federal highway system like we have today), but roads specifically for mail to be delivered on. The power to build postal roads was simply an extension of their powers to collect and distribute mail. In fact during James Monroe's presidency there was much debate about the federal government spending money on roads; a move which Monroe thought was UNCONSTITUTIONAL (since you're such a big fan of the caps). If we are on the topic of name calling and personal attacks, I must conclude that your personal attack on my level of knowledge about the Constitution and the U.S. government as a sign of you, yourself, having a weak and flawed argument (which I believe you do). If you want to get nit-picky I am more than willing to pick through your comments. As one example, your comment about the U.S. ALWAYS being a two-party system is factually incorrect and quite easily verifiable. If you look at the Era of Good Feelings (1815-1828) the Democratic-Republicans were the only real party (the Federalists effectively dissolved after 1814). Also, if you look to the 1850s the U.S. had Whigs, Democrats, and Republicans who all vied for major seats in the U.S. government. So, Heavy D, your statement that “Politically we have always had 2 sides believing 2 different things about the role of federal government” is factually incorrect. Sometimes we've had two sides, other times we have had more, and at other times we have had less. Based on this factual error I must conclude that you “know nothing about the Constiution [sic] and the powers of government.”

The media did not release Bush's DUI information, Gore released it. The media simply reported it.

Personal attacks on Rush Limbaugh are extremely warranted when he serves as the spokesman for traditional moral values. Anyone who espouses these values, criticizes others for not holding or living up to the same values and fails to live by his own standards is a hypocrite. In regard to Dean, he admitted to having an alcohol problem in his 20s which should be excusable by Republicans who supported Bush regardless of his alcoholism and drug use at least until his 40s. Also, there is one key difference between Dean and Limbaugh or Bush. Dean isn't out on his soapbox espousing moral values whereas both Bush and Limbaugh are. If you can't live by the standards you hold other people to then you're a hypocrite, plain and simple.

Also, using your “personal attacks are the hallmarks of a weak and flawed argument” certainly points to a weak and flawed McCain campaign that has focused more on Obama than what McCain plans to do with the country: disregarding Obama's experience as a community organizer, saying that Obama palls around with terrorists, and allowing blatant racism and hatred at their rallies. If McCain had such strong ideas about what direction to take the country then he should have focused on that rather than name calling and personal attacks on Obama…weak.

If you listened to Obama's plan, it is simply in regard to taxes. Yes, if you make over $250,000 you will be taxed higher. Taxes are a form of redistribution a.k.a. spreading the wealth (again, nice soundbite from the McCain camp). If we didn't have taxes we wouldn't have things like roads, libraries, public universities, etc. I again ask you my original question, specifically what items should government provide for?

Also, you have clearly demonstrated your lack of knowledge of the Constitution. If government only went by its enumerated powers in the Constitution then the federal government would not perform the tasks it does today that citizens enjoy (such as roads and libraries). However, anyone who has taken a high school American government course knows that the Constitution (as it has been interpreted) gives government enumerated AND implied powers.

  32. Heavy_D says:

You said the constitution didn't mention “roads”! But clearly it does. There are 2 million miles+ of paved roads in the US that the post office uses and so does everyone else! You said they weren't in the Constitution. Did I miss read that post? Now you are listing all this other stuff. I will agree that the Federal government has way over stepped its bounds.

You argue like my kids. I can hear it know: Kid 1 whining “but DAD! George Bush grew government with the medicare part D so why can't I add Universal health care?” my response ” ” If George Bush jumped off a bridge would you? And clean your room too!”

Clever on the Bush DUI. If you believe the media has a right wing pro Bush bias then we really have to re examine this conversation.

You say the McCain are using personal attacks and that's weak but you do this AFTER attacking Rush Limbaugh, a private citizen who isn't running for anything.
We are all weak. I believe we are all sinners. I certainly am but that doesn't mean what we say isn't valid. that's another type of false argument. Books have been written on hypocrisy and I could rattle off a huge list here to support my argument but that doesn't change that you are trying to detract from the core of my argument and that is The US Constitution DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING ABOUT SHARING THE WEALTH.

Where does the Constitution give government the right to “spread the wealth”? The top 1% income earners make 22% of the income but pay 40% of ALL income taxes. Is that fair? I know people who make a lot more than me. Most of them work longer hours and have made more sacrifices than I have to get there. But I guess since I drive a Hyundai and not a BMW I should be entitled some of the wealth too.

You undermine your own pro Obama stance every time you say the government already does stuff that isn't in the Constitution. Because it has been done in the past doesn't make his adding to it ( or McCain) right.

  33. RockMaker says:

I will say this right away, I don't follow politics closely at all, and don't have a lot of backing facts (if any), but it's always been my understanding that either communism or marxism goes by the idea of “spread the wealth”. I do not make as much as way to many other people, and would like to, but I can't agree with this spread the weath idea, simply due to my thoughts of democracy versus communism or marxism, whichever the case may be. Feel free to shoot me down, as I said, just my understanding, not necessarily right. If I am in fact wrong, please let me know!

  34. Melissa says:

Communism: Classless society (in definition). In practice, we see Marxist theory become overrun by government and form a totalitarian state.

Socialism: Collective ownership and administration of production of goods, business. Socialism produces an egalitarian state.

Spread the wealth…is a far cry from the Socialism it's been accused of. I'm not saying this to troll this forum or start a pissing match, but from someone who's spent too much of their free time reading about Russian and Polish history…namely in the 20th century. The closest thing to socialism in our current government are the following examples (I'm only listing two for brevity):

    1. Subsidies on agriculture – government has an influence on the supply and demand curve for crops. This subsidy creates a price floor, meaning the price paid per unit cannot go below a certain price. Subsidies are meant to sustain smaller farms, ensure farmers continue to produce, etc.

    2. Government bailouts. Simply put, the government takes stake in a business. It's not quite to the effect of the government buying and controlling a business, but nonetheless, it's one step in that direction.

Best tip on this subject is to have a good grasp on macroeconomics. You'll find that there are indeed cases of concern against the Democratic party (namely in strict regulation of business practice) but the “Socialist tax” claims are merely a jab at a progressive tax structure – tax rate increases with income. Obama's plan is defined such that taxes (compared to current rates) will not require more payout unless your income is $250,000.00 or above for your household.

Socialist? No. Progressive tax rate? Yes. Fair? That's up to the voter to decide.

  35. Melissa says:

J – excellent point at the end regarding the Constitution.

Enumerated and Implied powers. The constitution (itself) is a fascinating document but the framework it has set is even more so. I took a political science course in college about the Constitution, and I know I grumbled about the term papers, but after reading some of these comments, I realize now that I'm happy I took that course…

  36. Tiffany says:

Believe it or not, there are countries that exist–peacefully, mind you–without the private ownership of guns. For example, in Japan, only certain police officers are legally allowed to own guns. Admittedly, the Yakuza also owns guns, but organized crime is something in itself.

  37. A says:

Thanks J for taking the time to make some very good points. Heavy_D is a glutton for punishment but it has been entertaining to read your calling out. You obviously know what you are talking about.

  38. A says:

I'm tired of all these frightened Right -wingers calling Obama the Messiah and God etc. Where do they get this stuff? Obama is a man who has the talent of great communication skills. I think he speaks in a tone that is as christian as a politician can get but maybe that's what scares so many Republicans. I think people vote for whoever they feel like they can have a beer with . The problem is that greedy, selfish, and violant people want to have a beer with other greedy, selfish , violent people. So they are comfortable with the deceitful , lying, fear mongering that Palin and the whole McCain/Palin campaign expresses. They feed into it instead of unifying. It's sad that more republicans can't consider the nation and the world instead of being so focused on their own bottom line.

  39. CPCheats says:

While some interest group ratings might rank Obama as the most liberal senator, it is usually because he was unable to vote in many of the votes the interest group is using to rank the members of Congress.

  41. PR says:

SO WHAT! She is just another lying re-puke-i-can right-wing b!tch. Hey Sarah…guess what? You can see Canada from Erie. A lot better than you can see Russia from your back porch. Go back to Alaska where you can freeze you airheaded brain.

  42. Liberty says:

@Barry08: “The last 8 years saw the American People lose a record number of freedoms and liberties under “Executive Privilege””

Hey genius… name 4 “freedoms” and “liberties” lost?

You are nothing but a sour liberal moron, who would sell your liberty for a $100 stimulus check. So name 4 or shut the heck up and leave Erie Blogs free from your poison..

  43. Liberty says:

I can name 1 freedom lost during the Soetoro administration rule…

    It’s called ‘employment’

Record unemployment of 17.6% (this is actual unemployment not the sugar-coated number)…

You Democrats are in the minority now.. enjoy the drunken spending spree while you can.. because come next election the American people are flushing you all down the toilet along with Soetoro, Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, Franks, Rangel.. and the rest of the conga-line of tyrants…
