In case you missed it, we’ve received word from a few sources that Gov. Sarah Palin will be campaigning in Erie on Thursday. No details as to where and when the event will be, but when we know, we’ll post the info.
MTR Gaming, which owns Presque Isle Downs & Casino, took a hit when it was announced the Running Aces Harness Park located in Minnesota decided to let their lender take over the track. The track lost $4 million in its first racing season and laid off 10 percent of the staff. By the way, check out and compare the Running Aces website with that of Presque Isle Downs (beware of obnoxious music that will drive you nuts).
Judge Surrick of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania dismissed a lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania attorney Philip Berg that challenged the citizenship status and eligibility of Senator Barack Obama to become U.S. president. (You can view Obama’s Hawaii brith certificate here.) Berg claimed that Obama was not a U.S. citizen since his mother married an Indonesian man, and Obama failed to reclaim it upon becoming an adult. A similar challenge was made against Senator John McCain arguing that McCain did not qualify as a natural born US citizen because he was born at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, a military installation outside of US territory.
The Erie Times News joined a majority of newspapers across the country by endorsing Barack Obama for president. ETN endorsed George Bush in 2004.
The Republican Federal Committee of PA – Victory 2008 sent out an email last week with a rather inflamatory statement:
Jewish Americans cannot afford to make the wrong decision on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 . . . Many of our ancestors ignored the warning signs in the 1930s and 1940s and made a tragic mistake. Let’s not make a similar one this year!
Although PA Republicans quickly announced the email was a mistake and was never authorized, the consultant hired to reach out to Jewish voters states the email was vetted by the appropriate officials before being sent out. The McCain campaign repudiated the e-mail saying it “rejects politics that degrade our civics.”
If you’re salivating over the next juicy bit of drama from the Joyce trial you’ll have to wait. The trial of former Superior Court Justice Michael Joyce has been put on hold due to Joyce’s mother passing away last Friday at Hamot.
For the first time in 16 years, Halloween events were held in Oil City at night. Since the 1992 abduction and murder of 11-year-old Shauna Howe, Halloween events were held during daylight hours. Howe was on her way home from a Girl Scout Halloween party when she was kidnapped.

Not that it bothers me, but that birth certificate has been discredited. It was not created on a typewriter and father's race is “African” when in the 1960s the term was “Negro”. The father's citizenship only matters for dual citizenship not anything else. He was born in the United States and that's all it takes.
Please share a link to credible info that shows the birth certificate is indeed a fake.
It would be very helpful if people would do at least a minimum amount of research regarding claims such as these before spreading them around. In less than a minute of searching (really, people, Google is your friend), I found this article on FactCheck.org regarding Senator Obama's birth certificate, which specifically addresses the listing of his father's race as “African,” along with a lot of other tinfoil-hat-type theories. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in…
I stand corrected on this one. I had followed this story briefly this summer and this certificate was passed around and the Obama campaign (sort of) famously rejected a request by a Florida newspaper ( St Petersburg Times I think) for the certificate. That was the last I had seen it. I apologize that I didn't pursue an update before posting.
As for proving it fake, I am pretty sure that was the line Dan Rather used on his forged National Guard documents. In this case the Campaign did by releasing it formally.
As for Google certainly has some great stuff but you still have to filter through it (again my fault on this one)
Fact check is funded by the Annenberg Foundation. I knew I had heard that name before and sure enough the Annenberg Challenge ( an offshoot of the main foundation) is where Barack Obama and William Ayers served as board members together! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annenberg_Foundation. Imagine my surprise to find this coincidence!
Factcheck.org does some good stuff but to trust any group blindly is a mistake. These days that seems especially true if a group claims to be non-partisan or unbiased.
From your own Wikipedia link….Isn't Lenore Annenberg the president, chairman, and sole director of the Annenberg Foundation? Isn't she a staunch Republican and big McCain supporter? ($2,300 on 05/21/08 and another $2,300 on 09/28/08)
I'm not sure where you got the idea that anyone here is “blindly trusting” any group. The information on FactCheck.org regarding Obama's birth certificate looks pretty credible and is supported by information found on a plethora of other websites. I simply cited the one I found to contain the most explicit information.
