Indianapolis Colts DB and Erie native Bob Sanders was profiled by WISH-TV in Indianapolis. The station traveled to Erie to interview Bob’s parents.

Stephan Koller of GE Transportation in Erie had his letter to the editor of the Jakarta Post published in today’s edition.  He responded to the newspaper’s previous coverage of Erie and the presidential election, including GE’s position about globalization and fair international trade.

The U.S. Roman Catholic Bishops are meeting this week to resolve their concerns about policies and laws that might make abortion more readily available, as well as other issues of concern.   An official statement on behalf of the U.S. bishops should be reached later today. Bishop Donald W. Trautman, of the Erie Diocese believes the tone of the statement should be “prophetic, challenging … strong, in the best biblical tradition.”  Bishop Trautman also will be leading the charge for translations that are more modern.  One of the terms he’s not fond of using is ‘gibbet.’

MTR Gaming, which owns Presque Isle Downs and Casino, reported a loss of $8.2 million or $0.30 per share compared to a loss of $2.8 million or $0.30 per share last year.

The Center for Political Participation at Allegheny College will host a special post-election event, “Full Disclosure: The Media and the 2008 Election,” on Nov. 20. E.J. Dionne Jr., a widely syndicated Washington Post columnist, will present the conference keynote address, titled “Election 2008: What Exactly Happened and What Will It Mean?,” at 7:30 p.m. in Ford Chapel. Dionne will discuss the long-term implications of the election, what we can expect from the new administration and how the extraordinary economic events that are going on now could leave a mark on our politics for years, even decades, to come.

Tops Friendly Markets is in the process of renovating its stores. Tops re-opened its Olean, Cattaraugus County, store as the first of many in a series of new construction projects. Katie McKenna, who is the spokeswoman for the chain, said Tops plans will give more specifics on its capital plan early next year. Erie has two Tops locations that surely will be part of that renovation plan.

There is a letter to the editor of the Ottawa Citizen by a Canadian from Nova Scotia who shared how he helped campaign for Barack Obama here in Erie two weeks ago.

WICU 12 will hold its annual Holiday Food Drive today. They will be collecting food in Erie, Meadville, Warren and Corry from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. In Erie, they’ll be at the WICU studios at 3514 State St. In Meadville, they’ll be at the Meadville Tribune parking lot on Federal Street. Warren – check out the Northwest Savings Bank at the corner of 2nd Ave. and Liberty. Corry – you’re at the Northwest Savings Bank on W. Columbus Avenue and New Richmond – you can hit up the New Richmond United Methodist Church on PA Route 77. You can also donate money online at their website.

Dr. Thomas A. Forsthoefel, chair of the religious studies department at Mercyhurst College, recently published his fourth book, a compilation of teachings on wisdom, compassion, and meditation by the 14th Dalai Lama. “The Dalai Lama: Essential Writings (Modern Spiritual Masters)” is the latest addition to the Modern Spiritual Masters Series from Orbis Books.

The Gudgeonville Bridge, which was destroyed by arson last Friday, will most likely be removed completely due to safety concerns sometime in the next two weeks. There are still no suspects in the arson. Totally uncool.

Erie native Amanda Post, who graduated with a degree in intelligence studies from Mercyhurst College in March 2008, has been named “Rookie of the Year” by her employer, SRA International, a private intelligence consulting firm headquartered in Fairfax, Va., after only six months on the job. We don’t know if she’s related to TV news anchor and Patsy Cline portrayer Amanda Post.

Sometime late last week, an unknown person broke into a Fairview home. Nothing was stolen. The only thing changed – the volume on the TV set. It was muted. *shrug* We got nothin.

Bob Melzer, of Ohio, was arrested in Georgia last Friday. He is wanted in this area for selling phone book ads for a phone book that was never published. No word on if he will be extradited back to this area. If you were scammed by this man, let us know and we’ll run some ads for your business for free. Seriously.

The campaign signs have barely been taken down this year’s election and already campaigns are heating up for next year. Interested parties include Barry Grossman, who’s thinking about a County Executive run and Rubye Jenkins-Husband and Jessica Horan-Kunco eyeing the Mayoral post. The next primary election day is May 19. Nomination petitions can be filed starting February 17.

Philly lawyer Carl Buchholz testified yesterday in the Michael Joyce case. He testified that Joyce had complained of back pain during a round of golf that Buchholz arranged at the Merion Golf Club. Buchholz also managed Joyce’s superior court political campaign.

Gannon University’s Dahlkemper School of Business Administration will host an informational workshop for high school students who are considering majoring in business. Marriott Vacation Club International has appointed Patrick Botwright to the position of general manager at Marriott’s Crystal Shores on Marco Island. Patrick, we’d be more than glad to come to the resort and check it out, as your guest of course. Botwright graduated from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. with a Bachelor of Arts degree in hotel, restaurant and institutional management.

Sports

The Erie Otters will play the Owen Sound Attack at the Tullio this Friday and Saturday (both games begin at 7 p.m.).

The Mercyhurst women’s soccer team will host the first and second rounds of the Atlantic Region tournament Friday and Sunday to start the NCAA tournament. No. 3 Atlantic Region seed Bloomsburg will play No. 6 seed Slippery Rock Friday at 2 p.m. The winner of that contest will play against host institution Mercyhurst Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the 2008 All-PSAC Women’s Soccer Teams today. A pair of Edinboro players were recognized, with Ashley Jones (Erie, PA/Fairview) earning first team honors at defender and Elise Falatach (Bay Village, OH/Bay) (left) landing a spot on the first unit at midfielder.

The Gannon University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in a quad-meet at Cleveland State University Tuesday. The women beat John Carroll 171.5-49.5 and Notre Dame (Ohio) 157-72, while the men defeated JCU 164-67 and Notre Dame 190-26. The host Vikings beat the Lady Knights 149-91 and the men dropped a 136-88 decision.

Mercyhurst College athletic director Craig Barnett has announced the hiring of Lauren Packer Webster as the department’s Director of Sports Information. She comes to Mercyhurst from Allegheny College, where she was the Director of Athletic Communications and Sports Marketing.

The Erie Sports Store has opened its new location. It moved from next to Tinseltown to the old Media Play store location.

Events

The Erie Art Museum’s Contemporary Music Series presents Lou & Peter Berryman in concert at the Erie Art Museum Annex tonight at 8 p.m. The performance will be held in the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street, admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested. They have appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and NPR’s Weekend edition.

Award-winning poet David Mason will read from his work at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 in the Tillotson Room of Allegheny College’s Tippie Alumni Center at Cochran Hall. The program, which is free and open to the public, is part of the college’s Single Voice Reading Series.

The BusFormer Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome “The Bus” Bettis will share his championship choices at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Bettis appears at the college as part of its annual Speaker Series. His presentation, titled “Championship Choices,” will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Nov 13, in Penn State Behrend’s Junker Center. Admission is FREE but will require a ticket; tickets will be distributed to the public beginning on Tuesday, Oct 28. Tickets will be limited to four per person and must be picked up at the Reed Union Building main desk. Desk hours are 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm on Friday, and 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday. The desk is closed on Sunday. No tickets will be available by phone or mail. Bettis’ “Championship Choices” presentation is sponsored by Penn State Behrend’s Student Activity Fee, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Harriet Behrend Ninow Memorial Lecture Series Fund. Maribel Cruz, Allegheny College class of ’87, will be in residence at her alma mater Nov. 14 to 17 to share her work in dance and psychology with the Allegheny community. On Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Montgomery Performance Space, Cruz will give a presentation, “Observations on –isms: My Work with Bill T. Jones,” concerning her experiences with the choreographer in his piece “Last Supper at Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”

A benefit will be held for “Baby Barry” who was born May 5, 2008 with heart defects: Coarctation of the Aorta and a faulty valve. The Aorta has been patched (the surgery at 10 weeks old) and the valve is to be replaced this December. The benefit will be held November 15, from 2 – 6 p.m. at the Greene Township Municiple Building, 9333 Tate Road, with food, music, and other events to help raise money. $10.00 donation and kids 5 and under are free. The Lake Erie Ballet‘s Annual Fundraiser Gala, celebrating 50 years of The Nutcracker Suite production, will be held this Saturday November 15, 2008 from 6 – 10 p.m. at Matthew’s Trattoria & Martini Lounge. There will be a formal cocktail dinner party and libations to honor Del Sheaffer,for her 22 years of service to the ballet as well as past and present Directors and Board Members of the Lake Erie Ballet.
