Erie PA News and Events for Monday, November 17, 2008

It was a little later then expected, but the lake-effect snow came on strong yesterday and overnight into this morning. Some areas may have received up to 15″ overnight. How much did you get in your area?

Check out some blog reaction here and here. Some people even reported some thunder snow. Thunder snow is cool.

There are a number of school closings and other delays reported this morning.  WICU has a list available here.

Don’t forget we’ve got WSEE weather right next to this post. Check it out to see how much more snow we’ll get today and the rest of the week. It’s also a good chance to check out the progress of Ray Petelin’s mustache. We call dibs on the band name “Ray Petelin’s ‘Stache.”

Congresswoman elect Kathy Dahlkemper became popular in Washington and she hasn’t even been sworn in yet. She was contacted the day after she won the election by Representative’s Henry Waxman and Mike Doyle on behalf of John Dingell.  Waxman is gunning for Dingells position as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.  It will be interesting to see if Dahlkemper sides with Waxman who represents Beverly Hills, California and the surrounding area, or John Dingell who represents a portion of the Detroit Metro and Ann Arbor.

Judges rejected Ralph “Bucky” Phillips’ appeal this weekend. For a reason known only to Phillips, he decided to try to appeal his guilty plea.

The online mag KeystoneEdge has a short article on the “Tap into Erie” campaign put on by a number of regional organizations including the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership.  The article reveals Erie County has a daily surplus of 30 to 40 million gallons of clean water. Industries targeted include craft beer brewers and data management companies that need abundant water to cool huge banks of computers.

Bill Steigerwald of the Pittsburgh Post-Tribune provides some post-presidential election analysis specific to Western Pennsylvania. His analysis takes a look at Pittsburgh, Erie, and other counties, and reveals how many fewer counties Obama won compared to democrats in past presidential elections. Steirgerwald concludes race probably was a major factor in that outcome.

Sports

Machuga was ranked #5 going into the tournament and beat #1 seed Bill ONeill of Southampton, Pa. with a score of 209-204. This was Machuga’s first title in seven years. No word if Mike performed his signature Machuga Flop for the audience.

Jeff Reed kicked a 32 yard field goal with only 11 seconds left to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 11-10 win over San Diego in what we can only call an ugly game. A late Troy Palamalu touchdown was waved off as a forward pass was called
