The Erie Times-News announced yesterday they will offer buyouts to 25 employees, or about 9% of their work force in a cost-cutting move. Employees were notified of the cuts during a meeting yesterday afternoon. We certainly don’t mean to poke any fun at the pain of losing a job,but when we read the story at GoErie, we were struck by the advertisement that ran with the story. Here’s a screen grab.
Some parts of Erie received around 1 1/2 feet of snow yesterday in what is our first major snow fall of the winter season. The city received less than a foot and outlying counties recieved almost 2 feet of snow. Because of the weather conditions, there were multiple car crashes along the Bayfront highway yesterday. Please be careful out there today. There will be some snow showers with the high in the mid-thirties.
It’s still undetermined when the city will move its 9-1-1 services to the new Summit Township call center. Even when the move takes place a few emergency call operators will remain at City Hall.
Yesterday was closing arguments in the Michael Joyce trial being held in Pittsburgh. Joyce is being prosecuted for mail fraud and money laundering for bilking insurance companies $440,000 from a 2001 car accident. Joyce who has held the role as judge and jury in the past, now will have his fate determined by a jury of his peers.
Hamot Medical Center made the Thomson Reuters list of 100 U.S. hospitals for its excellent cardiovascular care. All the hospitals receiving this award had a 26% lower mortality rate for bypass surgery and a lower cost per individual surgery of $1,542. Congratulations to all of the doctors and staff that made this possible and right here in Erie no less.
Chicago Post-Tribune columnist Jeff Manes has an off the wall interview with Dave Spencer, who is formerly of Union City, Pa. Spencer recounts his earlier days in Union City which includes saw mills and cherry picking. It was Spencer’s business card that caught the columnist’s eye and prompted the interview–the card read “… plane for charter, train engineer, boat captain, accordion aficionado!”
Preservation Pennsylvania, a group dedicated to preserving PA’s historical landmarks, released a list of the state’s endangered sites to promote municipalities to take action to preserve and protect various landmarks. Unfortunately the efforts of PP are too late to save the Gudgeonville Bridge which was burned by arsonist(s) earlier this month. No leads yet as to who is responsible.
If you’re looking for some authentic buffalo wings, you’ll need to search no further than Tops Friendly Markets. The chain just announced that all of it’s grocery stores will begin selling five varieties of Anchor Bar chicken wings at the prepared foods counter daily. The Anchor Bar of Buffalo, NY, has been making the famous wings since 1964, and claims to be the home of the buffalo wing. This becomes the second partnership that Tops has announced recently, the first being the addition of Tim Hortons coffee and baked goods to all locations by the end of this year.

Buffalo Bills narrowly lost to the Cleveland Browns last night 29-27. Rian Lindell missed a 47 yard field goal with only 38 seconds left to play in the game.
Cleve Wright, Gannon University’s head women’s basketball coach, became the winningest coach in the school’s history Sunday when he picked up win number 106 in a victory over Fairmont State. His career record at Gannon is 106-69, and he’s the sixth coach at the college to reach 100 victories. Congratulations, Coach!
The Penn State Behrend volleyball team took first place in the 2008 ECAC Division III South Volleyball Championship this weekend in Stevenson, Maryland with a win over Cabrini College. The ECAC volleyball championship is the first for Penn State Behrend, in the team’s second ever tournament appearance.
The Erie Otters will have a player appearance at McDonald’s on Broad Street later today at 6:30 p.m. Brett Cook, Tyler Hostetter and David Shields are scheduled to appear.

Gannon University’s Schuster Gallery will host the exhibit “The Art and the Artist,” beginning November 16, 2008 and continuing through January 16, 2009. The exhibit will feature the work of Vitus J. Kaiser who is a longtime art teacher in the Erie School District. A reception open to the public will be held from 3 – 6 p.m. on the opening day. The Highmark Caring Place has planned the first “Child Grief Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania on November 20. Students in over 100 schools in Erie, Pittsburgh, and Central PA will have activities to raise awareness about grief and to learn about resources available the Highmark Caring Place, a center that offers support groups and referral services for children coping with the death of a loved one. The Caring Place has locations in Pittsburgh, Erie and in Lemoyne, Pa. and will open a new facility in Warrendale, Pa., in early 2009. In Erie County, participating schools include Bethel Christian, Diehl, Erie Day School, schools in the Erie Catholic Diocese, Glenwood, Harding, McDowell, Our Lady’s Christian School, Parker Middle School, Pfeiffer-Burleigh, and Walnut Creek.
Mercyhurst College announced a program entitled “Creating a Culture of Trust: Conflict of Interest and Business Ethics” on December 11th at 8:15 pm. The event is being presented by Mercyhurst’s Evelyn Lincoln Institute for Ethics and Society, and will feature P. Kelly Tompkins, the executive vice president, chief administrative officer and chief financial office for RPM International, Inc., and a 1978 Mercyhurst grad. The talk is free and open to the public.
