Erie PA News and Events for the Weekend of November 29, 2008

Snows yesterday caused a few crashes and made for some slippery driving. Check the box over there -> for road conditions if you’re travelling.

If you braved the shops yesterday, more power to you. We hope you got some good bargains.

A bit of good news for our area – sheriff sales were down in 2008 in Erie and Crawford counties. So far this year there have been 692 properties lsited as sheriff sales.

Emily Beck, director of tourism development for VisitErie has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Seaway Trail, which promotes tourism and economic development along the 518- mile freshwater shoreline region of New York and Pennsylvania.

If you want to beat the crowds or need a break from your (extended) family, a few movies opened this Thanksgiving weekend. They include Australia, Four Christmases, Transporter 3 and Milk.

The Erie Bayhawks opened their season last night and lost to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants by a score of 95-90. Oliver Layfayette of Erie led all scores with 31 points.

Strong Vincent’s season came to an end last night against Thomas Jefferson, dropping the PIAA quarterfinal game 35-21. The team finishes the season 13-1.

Gannon beat Lake Erie College 76-56 in the first round of the Gary Miller Classic. Gannon will face Daemen tonight at 8 p.m.

Justin Hodgman scored a goal and two assists to lead the Erie Otters to a 4-3 victor over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 2,433 at the Hershey Centre. David Shields and Brandon Biggers each added a goal and an assist for the Otters while Andrew Yogan rounded out the scoring. The Otters ended a three-game losing streak with the win to improve to 12-13-1-0 on the season.

The time of the Pittsburgh-Baltimore NFL game on December 14 has been moved to 4:15 p.m. as part of the NFL’s flexible scheduling.

Sophomore netminder Ryan Zapolski stopped 39 of the 40 shots he faced and Mercyhurst College defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 4-1, in the second game of the first round of the 58th Annual Rensselaer Holiday Tournament at the Houston Field House. The Lakers improve to 4-8-1 while the Engineers drop to 2-9-1.

Gannon University will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of one of the most influential Catholic writers of the 20th century with a four-part Advent Lecture Series. The series will focus on Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, prolific poet, social activist, and acclaimed author on the subject of spirituality. Merton, a Catholic convert, became a pioneer in interreligious dialogue and one of the seminal figures of 20th century American Christianity. The series, being held on the four Sundays of Advent, will begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 with a lecture by Canadian poet and essayist J.S. Porter. Porter’s lecture is titled, “Bonding with Readers: Merton’s Voice of Friendship & Intimacy.”
