Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Monday, December 15, 2008

Bob at Erie’s Groceries posted this weekend that Troyer Farms is in the process of being sold to Snyder’s of Hanover. If this indeed the case, we hope that Snyder’s will keep the plant open and the people there employed. If we might also make one more request – bring back the smaller crinkles on the crinkle cut chips. Sometime during the last few years, the crinkle size was changed from a small one to a larger crinkle, which other chips have. The larger crinkle chips tend to break when trying to dip them. The old school ones, not so much. Rant over.

The FBI have released another photo of the bank robber who robbed a bank in Erie before moving on to the Cleveland area. He doesn’t have a catchy nickname yet, though we really like the ErieBlogs.com commenter who called him “Carhart Carl.” There’s a $5,000 reward if you have information that leads to the capture of Carl.

The Circle K on Glenwood Park Ave. was held up Saturday night. Three suspects have been taking into custody for questioning. No arrests have been made yet.

imagesIn case you missed it on Saturday: If you tuned into WJET Friday at noon hoping to catch the nationally syndicated Rush Limbaugh show, you = stunned. Connoisseur Media has replaced the long running popular program with The Dennis Miller Show. Miller is also a conservative, but we bet a lot of people aren’t happy with the decision. According to Joel @ The Press and Tower, officials at the station said the Limbaugh show was too expensive and rather then lay off more employees, they switched to a cheaper show.

PolitickerPA.com is reporting that outgoing U.S. Congressman Phil English believes the negative press about him closing offices early is attributable to Kathy Dahlkemper.  English insists he is just following House rules for outgoing congressmen.  The Erie Times in a recent article pointed out that when Tom Ridge was leaving office, he kept his offices open longer and was able to successfully assist high school students applying to military school (whether Ridge was following different rules not now in effect or simply was not following the rules at the time is not clear).   We think we have proof that English is right. Dahlkemper’s aide Tammy Roche in response to the accusation was quoted as saying “I would totally deny that.”  Notice how she didn’t say she does totally deny it but instead “would.” Very sneaky, Ms. Roche.

Dan Miller, a seasoned journalist working for a Nashville, Tennessee television station, reminisces about moments of inspiration and recognition in his life.  He mentions a recent forum post by WJET employee Chris Cerenelli who writes about how Miller is a role model to him.

Sports

It took a long drive at the end of the game, but the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Baltimore Ravens 13-9 to clinch the AFC North division title and a first-round playoff bye. The Steelers face Tennessee on the road next week.

It was a close game but the Buffalo Bills couldn’t pull it off in the end.  The Bills narrowly lost to the New York Jets with a score of 31-27 and now have no chance of making the playoffs.

Cleveland Browns play the Philadelphia Eagles tonight at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.

The Erie Otters are back home and licking their wounds.  The Otters lost all three games over the weekend getting beat by the Sarnia Sting on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday losing against the Windsor Spitfires.  The Otters are home for this weekend before the Christmas break, playing the Guelph Storm on Friday, and the Sudbury Wolves on Saturday.

The Erie BayHawks are off to a hot start. The ‘Hawks blasted the Mad Ants in a 100-82 win on Saturday night at Tulio Arena. The BayHawks are now 5-2 for the season.

Walley Mahle passed away this weekend at age 65. He played football at Fort LeBouef and later played for Syracuse and the Green Bay Packers. Our thoughts go out to his family.

RIT used three consecutive goals to overcome a late 3-2 deficit and defeat the Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team, 5-3, Saturday evening at the Frank Ritter Arena in Rochester, N.Y.

Gannon University’s Dan Teliski has been named 2008 men’s sports information director of the year for the Southern Division of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). Chosen by the CWPA Director of Communications, the SID of the Year award is presented to those offices which have achieved notable excellence in the field of water polo communications during the past academic year, according to the association.

The Edinboro wrestling team posted a pair of early surprises in Sunday’s match against sixth-ranked Ohio State, but the Fighting Scots fell short of upsetting the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s Corey Morrison ultimately sealed the 19-12 win with a 5-3 decision over Joey Fendone (Salem, NH/Central Catholic (Mass.)) in the heavyweight match. The loss drops Edinboro to 5-2, while Ohio State is now 3-0. A crowd of 1,457 took in the match at McComb Field House.

I concur with your assessment of the crinkle cut: the larger crinkle was a huge step backwards, dip or no dip.
