Programming Contest for High School Students

As if you couldn’t tell, we’re pretty big geeks and we like it when there are opportunities for local students to learn, program and experiment. Gannon’s running a programming contest with a top prize of $300.

Attention high school students: are you interested in computer programming?

If so, Gannon University is offering an opportunity to put your skills to the test while winning some money in the process.

The University’s Computer & Information Science department is sponsoring a Computer Programming Contest, designed to encourage students to pursue computing technology and to reward excellent work.

High school students in all grades are eligible to participate, and entries can be made individually or as a group. There is no cost to enter.

Students entering the contest must have a sponsoring teacher from their respective high school, or a private teacher for home schooling. Entries must be accompanied by the sponsoring teacher’s contact details, complete student information, and a clear technical documentation of the submitted project.

Entries can be written in any programming language as long as they are executable on a PC running a LINUX or Windows operating system. Games are acceptable.

Submissions also must be accompanied by clear documentation of:

  • The problem the program is intended to solve.
  • The capabilities of the program.
  • The correct operation of the program.
  • Entries will be judged on three primary criteria, including effectiveness at solving the documented problem, clarity of code design, and conciseness and completeness of documentation.

Interested students can begin submitting entries on Jan. 9, 2009. The final project submission deadline is March 13, 2009.

Winners will be announced in April. First prize will be $300.
