If you’re reading this from Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom or New Zealand, happy boxing day!
Christmas Day was pretty much perfect in terms of the weather. A light snow fell most of the morning and into the afternoon. Things were a bit slippery in the morning, but crews did a great job keeping things moving. Today and tomorrow should be much warmer, with temps Saturday in the 60’s.
If you work in the retail sector, today is probably going to be as busy as you’ve seen things all season. If you’re planning on returning something today, we’d recommend waiting until maybe Saturday. Are you back to work today?
The man found dead behind Sam’s Club on upper Peach Street has been identified as 59-year-old James Burchett, originally from Tennessee. Burchett was homeless and living behind Sam’s in a culvert. Sadly, Burchett’s family has been looking for him since the 1980’s and were notified Christmas Eve of his death.
Brain-trusts Michael McIntyre, Andrew Pavlock, and Leighann Hanson, of Jamestown, NY, were arrested for stealing items from a Sam’s Club in Jamestown. The trio would place items in larger containers, pay for the container (and not the item inside) and leave the store. The men may also face similar charges here in Erie for perpetrating the same scheme to Sam’s Club on upper Peach.
Take a break from the family with these movies opening this weekend: Bedtime Stories, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Marley and Me, The Spirit, Valkyrie, Revolutionary Road, Doubt.
Sports
The Erie BayHawks play two games at the Tullio this weekend. Saturday, the Hawks play the Reno BigHorns and Sunday against the Bakersfield Jam.
The Erie Otters hit the ice this Sunday away playing the Brampton Battalion.
Portland Maine might be getting an NBA Development League team as early as next year. If Portland hosts a D-League team, it would mean the Erie BayHawks would no longer be the farthest team east in the D-League, a fact that is surprising considering the fan base and geography of the north eastern U.S.
The Gannon men’s basketball team, ranked No. 4 in the latest National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC)/Division II Top 25, continues a nine-game homestand by hosting the 35th annual Porreco Cup Monday, December 29 and Tuesday, December 30 at the Hammermill Center.

I had to laugh about the Sam's Club incident! The brains got away with it since there were no brains at the cash registers! If when you scan the plastic container & it rattles….then there is more than plastic on your checkout belt!!! Too funny!!
