GE Transportation announced it is entering into a strategic partnership with Tülomsaş, an industrial company in Turkey that currently produces locomotives of its own. The partnership will allow GE to supply the European, Middle East and North African markets.  Tülomsaş has a number of photographs of the event which seems to have been well covered by company officials.

Musician Tim Fite teamed up with NPR to make a song and story about Pymatuning and the spillway. You can read/hear the story as well as the song here. There’s not much to see at the spillway this time of year, but come springtime it’s worth a trip.

PNC Bank finalized the purchase of National City this week making PNC one of the larger banking institutions in the U.S.  Unfortunately that also means a number of National City banks in the area will be consolidating and/or sold off as required under the agreement with the U.S. Justice Department.  Local blogger Eric got a picture from one local National City bank which illustrates the current mood.

The opening of the LECOM Wellness Center at 54th and Peach Streets has been delayed until February. The center was scheduled to open this month.

Former Albion prison employee Terri O’Neill has filed a lawsuit against the state claiming discrimination. O’Neill, a white woman, claims prison superintendent Marilyn Brooks told her not to apply for a promotion because the superintendent wanted the position filled by a black woman. O’Neill applied anyway and says she suffered retaliation for doing so including other types of discrimination. You might remember Brooks retired earlier this year from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections as part of the escapee fiasco of Malcolm Kysor.

A fight yesterday morning at 38th and Ash Streets has left a 27 year old man dead. The assailant is in police custody. Sad way to start a new year. Erie’s cumulative murder rate for the year — 1.

Sports

medium_eliasBill Elias, athletic director at Gannon University, will leave the university on January 9 to join the Miami University of Ohio’s football coaching staff. Elias coached at LSU with current Miami head coach Mike Haywood. Elias also coached the Golden Knights football team. He took the AD job in 2006.

Tonight and tomorrow the Erie Bayhawks will play the Sioux Falls Skyforce in South Dakota.  The Hawks won’t be back in Erie until next Wednesday.

The Erie Otters play the Brampton Battalion tonight at the Tullio and will play the Kitchener Rangers tomorrow night at home as well.

Sorry Penn State fans but it just wasn’t meant to be.  The Nittany Lions lost to the University of Southern California 38-24 in a heart-breaker.  The Lions played USC in the first Tournament of Roses bowl game in 1923 and lost that game 14-3.

On January 6, Kathy Dahlkemper will be sworn into the US House of Representatives as the 3rd District of PA representative.

The White Coat Ceremony marks the start of clinical education for LECOM students. The white coat represents the professionalism, knowledge and compassion of the health care professional. School of Pharmacy Ceremony begins at 10 AM on January 10 in the Warner Theater, Downtown Erie, followed by the College of Osteopathic Medicine Ceremony at 2 PM. Open to invited guests only. Not open to the public.
