Twittering in Erie

A commenter at the Press and Tower asked us to post on our site about Twitter, and some local companies and media organizations that are using Twitter as a social media tool.

So, first, what is Twitter? That’s a tough question. I think this video explains it best.

Twitter is a great way to keep up to date with your friends, colleagues, customers, and so on. It’s okay if you don’t get it at first, or you don’t see the post. Try it for a week. We predict you will find it becoming more and more a piece of your communications puzzle.

I use it to share ideas, thoughts and collaborate with other professionals in my field. Through Twitter, we’ve built a very nice community and it’s become a great resource in my day to day life. Heck, even my Mom and Dad use Twitter now.

It’s also a great way to keep up on local, national and world news. A lot of national organizations like CNN have Twitter accounts that they use to announce breaking news.

Unfortunately, not a lot of local media outlets are using Twitter. They should, it’s cool, easy and free.

l7293134803_9978_biggerOf course, ErieBlogs is using Twitter. You can find our page here or using your favorite Twitter client, type “follow erieblogs”. We tweet whenever we have a new blog post and sometimes when there’s something important to say.

You can also follow EB’ers Mike and Rich.

Locally, WSEE and WICU also have Twitter accounts. Click on their names to visit their pages. There’s no reason not to be using this tool to reach audiences. We’re looking at your WJET and Erie Times-News.

Other local Twitter feeds:
Allegheny College
Allegheny College Sports
Meadville First Presbyterian Church
WMCE Jazz Erie
GlobalErie
Ray Petelin

If you have a Twitter feed, please let me know and I’ll add it to this list. If you’d like to share your personal Twitter feed, that’s fine too, you can post it in the comments.

Another good one is twitter.com/eriefeed which is continuously flowing timeline of events in Erie. So far I've noticed it marks current weather conditions , emergency weather alerts, Erie Airport delays, births, deaths, amber alerts, road conditions, lake temperature, lottery results, local news from all the local media outlets. It even notifies you if the space shuttle or international space station is about to fly over.

Another cool feature is that you can tap into the feed through any cell phone by TXTing the word eriefeed to 41411 and it will automatically reply back with the most recent addition on the timeline.
