Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Monday, January 12, 2009

images4Hopefully, you had a chance to dig out a bit yesterday. Saturday was intense and the city is still clearing the streets, especially the side ones. We’ve found the key is to make friends with whatever neighbor has a snowblower. Our friend did ours in time for us to get wings before the Steelers game, allowing us to get our blankets, wings and drinks and catch a great football game and a great first 2 episodes of the new season of 24 (it’s already better then season six which aired about three years ago.)

Bad news for those of you who prepared for the flu season by receiving a flu shot and worse news for the rest of us. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that 86 of the 88 of samples of the most common flu type were resistant to Tamiflu. Even worse, the Pennsylvania Department of Health have confirmed resistance in at least one sample coming from Erie County.  Starting drinking orange juice and taking your vitamins now.

Here is an overview of Kenneth Gibson’s bank robbery spree that included two banks here in Erie and the pending criminal charges.  Not surprisingly Gibson had a prior rap sheet of kidnapping and burglary and is no stranger to the criminal justice system.  Apparently this previous experience came in handy as one eye witness to a Gibson robbery noted that he was efficient and practically unnoticeable in his crime.

Late last night, state police stopped a man on Interstate 79 northbound after receiving reports from other motorists that people in the car were brandishing a weapon. They should have been more worried about black ice.

The Peek’N'Peak ski resort in New York has a new obstacle for snowboarders and skiiers – it’s a school bus – a good old fashioned yellow school bus. It’s buried, luckily. This past weekend the resort held a “Back to School Bus Jam.”

Rehreg Pacific Company closed its New Hampshire plant and will consolidate these operations to its Erie plant, bringing a few more jobs to the area.  They are injection molders.

Ed Palattella in the Erie Times-News had a story yesterday about the voting record of Jeffrey Johnson during his tenure on the zoning hearing board. Last year, Johnson received a $30,000 payment from the real estate company run by Greg Rubino, who had several projects before the board.

Got a 9-inch Griswold cast-iron skillet made by the Griswold Manufacturing Company? It’s worth about $20. Griswold was a manufacturer of cookware from the late 1800s to the 1950s and based here in Erie. The question was posed in an article from a Lawrence, Kansas newspaper discussing this and other antique novelties.

Next time you’re in the Erie International Airport, you’ll notice there’s no more mention of Delta Airlines. Following their merger with Northwest, all the flights will be branded as Northwest.

Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper’s husband was mentioned in passing in this article for calling a newly sworn in congressman by his wrong name.  The anecdotal reference was made to illustrate that no matter how big you think you are in your district, you’re just one of 435 members of Congress on Capital Hill.

Sports

Ok, we’ll be honest. When San Diego came out and scored on their first possession of the game, we were a little nervous. The first half was tight – and the Steelers opened the third quarter with a long scoring drive to begin to open the game up. It’s tough to win when you only have the ball for under 20 seconds in the third quarter. The final score, 35-24, makes the game sound closer then it really was. Ben Roethisberger came back from his concussion and threw the ball maybe better then he has all season. Next week, it’s the AFC Championship against division for and long-time rival the Baltimore Ravens. Pittsburgh will host the game, which will be Sunday at at 6:30 p.m. on CBS.

Here are the results from the rest of the games this weekend:

Baltimore 13, Tennessee 10
Arizona 33, Carolina 13
Phildelphia 23, NY Giants 11

Marcus Carroll scored three times to lead the Owen Sound Attack to a 5-3 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday at the J.D. McArthur Arena.

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League in cooperation with Business Records Management (BRM), a leader in records and information management in Pennsylvania, invite all fans to participate in Avoid Theft ID Night being held this Friday when the Otters face the Niagara IceDogs at 7 p.m. at the Tullio Arena.

Erik Daniels scored 28 points to lead seven players in double figures as the Erie BayHawks stayed hot with a 109-88 victory over the Iowa Energy on Saturday night.

Tyler Stoczynski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded his first double-double since February 8, 2007 and the Gannon men’s basketball team held its ninth consecutive opponent under 60 points as the Golden Knights completed a perfect Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover weekend Sunday afternoon with a 76-59 victory at Mansfield.

The No. 9 Mercyhurst College Lakers finished eighth at the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Duals.

This will likely be a weekend that the Edinboro men’s basketball team won’t forget for awhile, although they would surely like to. For the second day in a row the Fighting Scots squandered a double digit lead and ended up on the short end of a 68-63 score at East Stroudsburg on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse. The loss left the Fighting Scots at 10-3, while the Warriors improved to 9-4.

The Allegheny men’s basketball team nearly rallied back from a 19-point first-half deficit, but fell short in its 72-64 loss to Wittenberg in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Regarding the Delta/Northwest merger….the information provided on this site should actually be the other way around. Northwest merged with Delta which means that the Northwest name will disappear, not the other way around. In fact, the Northwest signage at Erie Airport has already been removed and replaced with Delta signage.

This has to do with the playoffs this weekend. I just thought it was pretty interesting that any team with the color blue in their uniform did not win a game!

  3. will i am says:

AND THE STEELERS WIN THE SUPERBOWL!!!!
