Perhaps to thwart conspiracy theorists, President Barack Obama took the Presidential Oath again last evening from Chief Justice John G. Roberts. Seriously. The decision was made to re-do the oath due to an “an abundance of caution.” In case you aren’t sure if Obama is president, might we recommend isobamapresident.com.

The Polakowski family of Erie is suing the Ohio State University after their son, Andrew Polakowski, was killed in a dormitory elevator accident in 2006. The suit claims the University was negligent and is seeking more than $50,000. Sad story.

Police haven’t found any weapons nor have they made any arrests after the shooting of a Harbor Creek High School student at East High School on Tuesday. Police continue to investigate the shooting. The victim of the shooting has been identified as Shareese Birchfield, 21. She is still in Hamot Hospital.

images13Some cool news if you like movies, two local movie theaters have installed digital 3D projectors. Tinseltown installed theirs in time for My Bloody Valentine 3D and the Movies at Meadville will have theirs in time for the early February releases of Coraline, and more importantly, the Jonas Brothers film. Say, does anyone want to lend us money to re-open the Plaza Theater as an indie film haven? We’d be so down with that.

Penn State announced the latest faculty to receive senior Fulbright grants in 2008-09. On that list and from Penn State Behrend is English professor David John Savola, receiving a lecturing grant to University of Turku in Turku, Finland. The Fulbright program is the U.S. Government’s flagship program in international education exchange. Thirteen Penn State professors and administrators were honored with awards this year.

We reported yesterday that the Youngstown State University is reducing tuition fees for certain western Pa. residents, including those in Erie County. It appears the drop in price will come very close to that of instate (Ohio) tuition rates. YSU will probably update their website in the next few days to reflect the new rate.

The Manufacturer & Business Association announced that HR generalist Rose Bruno has recently earned her Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). As an HR generalist at the Association, Bruno is responsible for ensuring companies are in compliance with employment laws and regulations. Prior to her employment with the Association, Bruno served as the HR manager for Plastikos and as an HR administrator for Van de Kamp’s.

Sports

In case you were wondering, the Pittsburgh Steelers will wear their white uniforms in the Super Bowl. It worked in 2006, when they won, so we support this decision.

The BayHawks play against the Sioux Falls Wizards tonight.  Get your tickets here.

The Erie Otters will be away for four games and won’t return until next weekend.  Here’s the away schedule: Friday the 23rd against host Kingston Frontenacs; Saturday the 24th against host Belleville Bulls; Sunday the 25th host Ottawa 67s, and; Thursday the 29th against host Niagara IceDogs.

Mercyhurst earned its first PSAC West victory with a 76-71 overtime decision at Edinboro. The win snapped the Fighting Scots 31-game home winning-streak and marked the first Laker victory in the series since 2005-06 when Mercyhurst won 76-72 in overtime.

The Edinboro women’s basketball team defeated Mercyhurst , 69-59, in the first match-up between the two local rivals as PSAC members. The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC West. The Lakers are now 7-9 and 1-2, respectively.

The Allegheny men’s basketball team nearly found a way to knock off a strong Hiram squad, but was unable to hold onto a late lead in its 65-61 loss in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.

The Gannon men’s basketball team has been making life difficult for most teams this season with the nation’s top-ranked defense. Wednesday night was no different for the hard-nosed Golden Knights. Gannon held Slippery Rock, who entered the game as the PSAC’s second-best offense with 85.8 points per game, 26 points below its average en route to an 80-60 victory at the Hammermill Center.

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team hasn’t won at the Hammermill Center since the 1993-94 season, but it hasn’t been without some close calls. One year after Ashley Lowdermilk’s three-pointer with three seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime, Gannon erased a four-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime again.
