Cats is an award-winning musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T. S. Eliot. Since opening in London in 1981, the show has been performed around the world in numerous productions and has been translated into more than 20 languages. The show opens at the Erie PlayHouse and runs through February 15.

The Erie Art Museum’s Kids as Curators exhibit will open on February 6 and run through March 22, 2009 in the Annex Gallery. An exhibit of objects from kids’ collections, curated by kids for kids. This year we feature work of Harding Elementary, General McLane High School, and Walnut Creek Middle School. “Raw Edges,” an annual favorite of Erie dance lovers, returns for its 11th season on Feb. 7-8, showcasing the Mercyhurst Dancers in cutting-edge choreography by promising new talent. The concert is a culmination of the Mercyhurst College Dance Department’s Choreography II and III courses taught by Mark Santillano and Tauna Hunter, respectfully. Performances of Raw Edges XI are scheduled Saturday, Feb. 7, at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center on the Mercyhurst campus. Tickets are $15 for adults; $12.50 for seniors and students; $5 for youths under 15; $1 for Mercyhurst students; and $7.50 for President’s Cardholders. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, Gannon will host a showing of the movie “Trouble the Water.” The showing will be held in room 104 of the Zurn Science Center, 143 West 7th St., and is co-sponsored by Gannon’s Center for Social Concerns, Office of Service-Learning, Activities Programming Board, International Student Office, and the Departments of Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice.

Gannon University’s Schuster Theatre’s next show, “The Trachinae,” a fiery Greek tragedy, will be shown Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 12-14, and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Feb. 19-22. The McDowell Center for Performing Arts will present Arthur Miller’s Tony Award winning play The Crucible on February 12-13-14, 2009 in the Little Theatre (3320 Caughey Road). The play, praised as “A Powerful Drama” by the New York Times, deals with the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem. Yet, the play is more then a story of witchcraft. It is really a statement of bigotry and deceit, which can cripple society and cause chaos among citizens. Directed by Ken Falkenhagen and assisted by Michael Malthaner, The Crucible stars Marie Glaser, Dominic Barbaro, Kristie Bauman, Ryley Nesbella, Alexandra Schwartz, Sean Weese, and Brett Niethamer. Erie Celebrates the 200th Anniversary of President Lincolns Birth at the Battles Museum of Rural Life in Girard on Saturday, February 14, 2009 from 12 – 2 p.m. The Erie County Historical Society, Girard Borough and the Civil War Consortium present a rededication of the Civil War Monument in downtown Girard. Dedicated on November 25, 1865, the monument is considered one of the first to honor fallen Civil War soldiers. President and Mrs. Lincoln, Dan Rice and members of the 11th, 83rd and 145th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry are included in the rededication ceremony at the monument site in downtown Girard. Three students from the Girard Elementary School will be selected to read their winning essays about why President Lincoln is one of our country\’s most memorable presidents. A reception at the Girard Methodist Church will immediately follow the ceremony.

Environmentalist, activist and attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will speak on “Our Environmental Destiny” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15 in Ford Chapel at Allegheny College. Kennedy will discuss the role that our natural surroundings play in our work, our health and our identity as Americans. Using examples gathered from relevant art, history, litigation and literature, he will remind listeners of their responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations.
Allegheny College will host a special visit day for college-bound students and their families on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 16. High school seniors may schedule an interview with an admissions counselor, take a tour of campus with a current student and stay for lunch or dinner in one of Allegheny’s dining halls. The Elk Creek Recreation and Leisure Board in Girard is sponsoring the Cabin Fever Festival at Girard high School. The event is free (no admission) and will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2009 from 1 – 5 p.m. Activities include: free wwimming in school pool, snow shoe instructions by Asbury Woods, movie, piano recital, hay rides and snowmobile rides, sled riding (BYO Sled), crafters, face painting, and finger printing. Erie’s favorite event is right around the corner. The 18th Annual Erie Trivia Night Challenge will be held on Thursday, February 26 at the Avalon Hotel, 16 West Tenth Street, Erie. The event will benefit children in the Achievement Center’s Physical Rehabilitation programs. Think you have what it takes to sing the National Anthem at a Double-A baseball game? Well here is your chance. The Erie SeaWolves announce today their National Anthem tryouts will be held Saturday, March 21 at the Erie Playhouse. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and tryouts begin at 12 p.m. Those interested in auditioning will perform the National Anthem for a panel of judges. Auditions must be performed a capella.
