VisitErie has released a new video about Erie. They say “The fast-paced three and a half minute video features a pop-up theme, similar to VH1’s “Pop-Up Videos” highlighting fun and interesting factoids people may or may not know about Erie, Pennsylvania. The goal is to reach a more diverse and Internet savvy audience. ”
Despite the fact that Pop-Up Video hasn’t run on TV since 2002, we still think this video is kind of neat. It’s a good introduction to our area.
Gannon University’s Board of Trustees recognizes that today’s difficult economic times require the University to provide more financial assistance to college students than perhaps ever before. That is why the Trustees have authorized up to $2.6 million more this year for financial aid as part of the Gannon Stimulus Initiative. Additional financial aid will be available to current and prospective students, particularly those whose economic circumstances have adversely affected their ability to pay tuition. Students who may be eligible for a portion of the Gannon Stimulus Initiative could include, but not be limited to, those whose parents have lost their jobs or are experiencing unusual circumstances, and self-paying students who have become unemployed.
Last year, Gannon budgeted $24 million for financial aid. Due to the economic uncertainty many current and prospective students are facing, the Board of Trustees and the University administration believed that more financial aid money would be needed to support students who may not otherwise be able to afford college at this time. To that end, the Gannon Stimulus Initiative was created, increasing Gannon’s total financial aid to $26.6 million for the 2009-10 Academic Year.

Here is a great pic of a rusted out steam shovel with the stamp Bucyrus-Erie that we found on Flickr:

Bucyrus-Erie was the result of a merger in 1927 between Bucyrus and the Erie Steam Shovel Company (modern incarnation is Bucyrus International located in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin). Erie Steam Shovel was originally called the Ball Engine Company which was founded in Erie in 1883. In 1931, Bucyrus-Erie changed it’s name to Bucyrus-Monighan so it’s possible the rusty old bucket pictured above was made sometime around the Great Depression. (Photo credit catchesthelight.)

The very first factoid on the Visit Erie video states that Erie was founded in 1896. The correct date was 1795. That mistake is sad.
Bucyrus was also the company responsible for designing the crawler transporter for NASA – After it was designed, NASA realized that they were a government agency, and the project needed to out for bids. Yup, Bucyrus lost the bid to Marion Shovel company. Two crawler transporters were built and are still in service. They were built to transport the Saturn 5 rocket and mobile launch pad to the site of the tower. Bucyrus and Marion eventually merged.
Here is a link to one of the crawlers on my flickr page.

Another thing I noticed is that the SeaWolves are conspicuously left out at the part discussing Erie's semi-pro sports teams.
The incorrect date of founding needs to be corrected ASAP and all distribution recalled until it is. At first I thought they used the date of incorporation, but when I checked, the city was incorporated in 1851. I have no idea where the 1896 date came from. They need to use the 1795 date since Erie certainly existed prior to incorporation, and is shown on maps much prior ot that date.
I too noticed the lack of the Seawolves. That is regrettable.
Overall, I thought it was very well done and a great tool to get the word out about Erie.
Fred Biletnikoff ??? …anyway, I'm sending a link to this video to all friends far and wide! This is why ” We Love ERIE”!
This video is complete garbage. What's with the terrible 1988 synthesizer “music”? Are they kidding with that crap? The 1896 mistake is inexcusable.
Also, the featured “celebrities” bit is hilarious. Why even included them? I'm sure most people wouldn't even know who the hell any of them are (besides Alice from the Brady Bunch – ad that's just sad that she is one of Erie's featured “stars”).
typical Erie – done half-assed. This should be destroyed before it gets out.
Who produces this junk anyway? Pop up video? That's like, 1997 or so! Embarrassing.
probably don't want to brag about someone that said “Erie can drop in the lake as far as I'm concerned.”
