Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and LORD Corporation will host an information session for the LORD Scholarship Program—a unique program for students enrolled, or planning to enroll, in engineering, technical and science disciplines at Penn State Behrend. The information session will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Samuel P. “Pat” Black III Conference Center located in the Research and Economic Development Center (REDC) at Penn State Behrend. Parking will be available in the REDC deck located on Technology Drive, off Jordan Road.
State Representatives Michele Brooks (R – Crawford, Lawrence and Mercer), Pat Harkins (D – Erie), John Hornaman (D – Erie), Brad Roae (R – Crawford) and Flo Fabrizio (D – Erie) will address area business and community leaders during a legislative luncheon starting at noon Wednesday, February 25, at the Association’s Conference Center, 2171 West 38th Street. Registration begins at 11:45 a.m. The legislative panel will provide insight on issues such as health-care reforms, business taxes, labor laws and tort reform, and the 2009-10 state budget. Allegheny College will host a presentation, titled “Fixing America’s Economy,” by representatives of the Coalition for a Prosperous America on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in Ford Chapel. Steve Onyeiwu, associate professor of economics at Allegheny College and co-director of the college’s managerial economics program, will open the program with a brief analysis of the state of manufacturing in the United States and in northwestern Pennsylvania, putting the current situation into a historical context.
Science journalist Dava Sobel, the award-winning author of the best-sellers Galileo’s Daughter and Longitude, will speak at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, at 7:30 pm on Thursday, February 26, in the Samuel P “Pat” Black III Conference Center in the college’s Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). Admission is FREE and open to the public; parking will be available in the REDC deck located on Technology Drive, off Jordan Road.

Erie’s favorite event is right around the corner. The 18th Annual Erie Trivia Night Challenge will be held on Thursday, February 26 at the Avalon Hotel, 16 West Tenth Street, Erie. The event will benefit children in the Achievement Center’s Physical Rehabilitation programs. Participants in the event will be treated to an evening of lavish raffles, a silent auction; dinner fit for a king, and of course, the coveted Achiever’s Title. “Captain Dan” Geary will be returning as our master of ceremonies. “Captain Dan” will be navigating participants through three rounds of rip-roaring, mind-teasing Erie trivia questions to arrive at the infamous, “final question.” Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6 p.m. with the trivia to start at 7 p.m. Cost is $50 per person or $400 per table of eight. On Saturday, February 28th from 2-4 PM, PennEnvironment and the Clean Air Council are hosting a conversation on building a green economy with Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper; Pennsylvania State Representatives Patrick Harkins and John Hornaman of Erie at Gannon University. Specifically, the Congresswoman Dahlkemper will discuss her efforts to revitalize northwestern Pennsylvania’s economy with clean energy – such as solar and wind power through the federal economic recovery package. Educators from Erie County can find the cure for their cabin fever at the Erie Art Museum, 411 State Street, on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 from 4:30-7p.m. Educators from all disciplines and age levels can earn Act 48 credit. “The Cabin Fever Getaway is an opportunity for educators of students in grades K-12 in all disciplines to familiarize themselves with the Erie Art Museum’s tour and educational programs, meet artists, explore exhibits and earn Act 48 credit,” said Kelly Armor, Erie Art Museum education and folk art director. The Guelcher Film Series at Mercyhurst College will screen In Bruges on March 4 at 2:15 p.m. and 8 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $4 for students, $3 for President’s Card holders and Mercyhurst students are free. The Erie SeaWolves announce today their National Anthem tryouts will be held Saturday, March 21 at the Erie Playhouse. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and tryouts begin at 12 p.m. Those interested in auditioning will perform the National Anthem for a panel of judges. Auditions must be performed a capella. Gannon University’s Schuster Gallery will host its next exhibit, “The Woman Artist,” from March 27 through May 27, with an Artist Reception scheduled for April 24. The exhibit will feature the works of women locally and regionally. Gannon University on Saturday, March 28 will host its annual International Night celebration. International Night includes a dinner buffet, beginning at 6 p.m., with foods representative of different countries. Environmentalist, activist and attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will speak on “Our Environmental Destiny” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15 in Ford Chapel at Allegheny College. Kennedy will discuss the role that our natural surroundings play in our work, our health and our identity as Americans. Using examples gathered from relevant art, history, litigation and literature, he will remind listeners of their responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations.
The Erie Micro Brew Festival presented by WQLN and the Brewerie at Union Station will be held Saturday, April 18 at the Brewerie at Union Station in Erie, PA. This year’s fest features 25 craft brewers and a new event called the Sweet Treats Fair – a malty good time full of gourmet ice cream and soda for all the designated drivers.
