Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Monday, March 2, 2009

A man was pulled out of Lake Chautauqua and taken to Erie for treatment. We took a ride around the Peninsula Saturday and saw lots of spots where the ice was gone. It’s getting warmer now, so if you’re out there on the ice please be careful. If you’re keeping track at home, we’re about 7″ away from setting the all-time snow record.

As expected, Millcreek Township Supervisor Larry Curtis has announced he will seek re-election this spring. Curtis is currently chairperson and secretary of the board of supervisors.

The Erie Zoo is now open for the year. Yesterday, people who came to the zoo were admitted free thanks to Erie native Bob Sanders’ charity. Thank you, Bob!

US Airways is relaxing certain fees for customers who may have to change travel plans as a result of the March snow storms. The airline will waive the standard change fee, advance reservation and ticketing requirements for customers traveling to the following markets between Mar. 1 and Mar. 3 on any US Airways, US Airways Express or US Airways codeshare flight. Even though we didn’t get snow this weekend, Erie is included in the list of cities who will qualify for this.

Sports

The Erie Bayhawks have a series of home games coming up: Thursday, March 5 vs. Tulsa; Friday, March 6 vs. Sioux Falls; Sunday, March 8 vs. Sioux Falls; and Friday, March 13 vs. Dakota. Get your tickets here.

Logan Couture scored twice to ignite a five-goal explosion as the Ottawa 67’s topped the Erie Otters 6-4 in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday in front of 5,601 at the Tullio Arena. The 5,601 in attendance matched the second largest regular season crowd in Otters franchise history.  Sunday was a rematch against the Plymouth Whalers but this time the Whalers won 6-3.  There’s another home game on Wednesday against the Owen Sound Attack. Get tickets now.

The Gannon men’s basketball team allowed 80 points for only the second time this season, but a 60-percent shooting night was enough to secure a hard-fought 88-80 victory at Lock Haven Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both squads. The victory improved the Golden Knights to 15-0 all-time against the Bald Eagles.

Mercyhurst dropped a 70-62 decision in the season-finale at California to finish its inaugural season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with a 16-11 overall record and a 4-10 mark in the Western Division.

The Edinboro men’s basketball team celebrated Senior Day with an 88-79 win over Clarion at McComb Field House on Saturday afternoon, but it certainly didn’t come easy. The win boosted the Fighting Scots to 18-9 overall and 8-6 in the PSAC West, while Clarion finished the season at 11-16 and 2-12, respectively.
