Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Saturday, March 7

We caught a late night showing of the Watchmen last night. That movie was great but thanks to its length of 2 hours and 40 minutes, we’re a bit groggy this morning. We’ll be brief – go outside and enjoy the great weather.

Erie DA Brad Foulk has reviewed the medical files in the case of Gregory Jacobs and believes Hamot followed the correct procedures in 2007. Jacobs’ family is suing Hamot and CORE (Center for Organ Recovery) in Pittsburgh, claiming they ended their son’s life early to harvest his organs. Hamot was denied any wrongdoing.

The PA Commonwealth Court has ruled that the city of Erie does not have to reimburse the legal bills of former Erie mayor Rick Filippi. Filippi’s tab was over $370,000.

The Game Stop store on Upper Peach near Tinseltown was robbed by 2 white males. There’s a joke here, but I can’t think of one.

The Wegmans on W. Ridge Road is now selling beer. We could go for a Newcastle right about now.

Edinboro is featured in this Washington Post article about maple-sugaring. Next weekend is the sixth annual Maple Taste & Tour Weekend.

New students, same pods. New approach, same mission. Students, faculty members and staff from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will spend the week in Gulfport, Miss., as the college’s alternative spring break (ASB) program once again leads the multi-campus initiative to help residents clean up and rebuild after Hurricane Katrina and the other natural disasters that have affected the area. Penn State Behrend’s ASB 2009 is scheduled for March 8-13.

Sports

Brandon Biggers scored the only goal of the game 1:56 into overtime and Jaroslav Janus made 48 saves as the Erie Otters beat the Sarnia Sting 1-0 in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre. The Otters take on the Kitchener Rangers on the road tonight.

A strong finish in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference for the Erie BayHawks (21-17) as they beat the Sioux Falls Skyforce (20-18) 122 to 113, before a crowd of 3580 at the Tullio Arena. The game remained close throughout the first three quarters with the lead seesawing back and forth between the two teams. The BayHawks offense kicked–in in the final quarter, as the outscored the Skyforce 42 – 32 in the final stanza.

The Gannon men’s basketball team jumped out to a 34-19 halftime lead after limited Cheyney to 26.7-percent (8-30) shooting en route to a 69-50 victory Friday night in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) semifinals hosted at the Gannon University’s Hammermill Center.

The No. 3 Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team scored four goals in the first period and never looked back, as the top-seeded Lakers advanced to the College Hockey America championship game with an 8-2 victory over Niagara Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

The Erie RiverRats of the American Indoor Football Association will close out their 2009 training camp Saturday night with an inter-squad scrimmage at the Family First Golf Dome in Erie.

Events

This weekend is the Erie Sport and Travel Expo at the Bayfront Convention Center. Hours today are 10 am to 8 pm and tomorrow from 10 am to 5 pm. $7 for adults, kids 10 and under and parking are free.
