Erie PA News, Sports and Events for Tuesday, March 10, 2009

The PA Department of Labor reported that Erie County’s jobless rate in January was at 7.2% and Crawford County was at 8.1%. It’s almost a half percentage increase compared to January 2008.

Speaking of unemployment, FedEx Office (formerly Kinko’s) is offering free resume printing today (up to 25 copies).  There is a FedEx Office location at 5755 Peach St., phone: (814) 866-5679, and e-mail: usa1222@fedexkinkos.com.

We finally had a chance to check out the beer sales at Wegmans last night. They had a very good selection and while Mike and his Mom nommed on some salad bar, they saw quite a few people come in and out with six packs. The prices seemed reasonable, especially for more upscale stuff like Chimay. Mike’s glad they have Newcastle, though cringed at the $10 price tag.

Speaking of beer, Erie Brewing gets a nice write-up from this blog.

The Manufacturer and Business Association is now on Twitter. Check them out in our Erie Twitter Guide. They’ve also set up a Twitter account for Roar on the Shore. Nice. They’ve also announced that Poison frontman and TV reality star Bret Michaels will lead the bike parade.

Michael Joyce may find out today what his sentence will be. He was found guilty last November. Kristin wrote a great post about Joyce and his sentence here at EB last week.

A mental competency hearing for Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong is likely to be cancelled. The hearing is planned for tomorrow but mental health experts who planned on testifying have a scheduling conflict.

We’re sorry we missed the Papa Johns on 12th street getting robbed over the weekend. We’re sure we could have come up with a funny joke about the Noid.

It’s that time of year – road construction season. Work began yesterday on the I-79 interchange in Meadville. This year, the other bridge over 79 will be replaced. Expect single lane closures for the next few weeks as the area is prepared, and detours in the months to come once the bridge is taken down and rebuilt.

Governor Edward G. Rendell has announced that Kathy Iorio and Caryn Kadavy have been appointed to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. John Hersch has been re-appointed to the Advisory Council for Pennyslvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home.
