Former Erie County Executive Rick Schenker announced yesterday that he plans to run for lieutenant governor in the 2010 Republican primary. Schenker was elected county executive in 2001 and served one four-year term. He was also formerly a spokesman for PennDOT and the statewide director of the Pennsylvania Christian Coalition and has recently been working as a consultant.
Zac Petkansas has been named as Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper’s Communications Director. In the past, he has worked for Rep. Hilda Solis (D, CA) and was the deputy press secretary for the House Rules Committee.
The coroner has identified the man killed by a train in Erie on Saturday as 36-year-old Donald C. Oswalt. There has as yet been no ruling whether his death was intentional or accidental, and video from cameras on the train is currently being analyzed for evidence.
Penn State Behrend will receive $150,000 through the Keystone Innovation Starter Kit program. This program is designed to help colleges and universities recruit faculty researchers in science and technology. This money can also be used to fund labs and equipment related to advanced research. The money is part of a $2.5 million investment statewide that Governor Rendell said “provides funding for projects that will directly aid and enhance the scientific education of some of the smartest men and women in Pennsylvania.”
The Center for Political Participation (CPP) at Allegheny College will host a daylong conference, “Hot Shots of the 2008 Election,” on April 2 to explore lessons learned by young political operatives during the 2008 election. Sarah Simmons, strategy director for senator and 2008 presidential candidate John McCain, will present the event’s keynote lecture, “The Role of Young Staffers in Political Campaigns,” at a reception and dinner at 5:45 p.m. in the Tillotson Room of the Tippie Alumni Center. Members of Mercyhurst College’s forensics department will be featured on the “All Things Erie” radio program on WQLN-91.3 FM. Forensic anthropologist Dr. Dennis Dirkmaat, research assistant Erin Chapman and graduate student Allison Nesbitt were interviewed last week by WQLN’s Kim Young about their role in recovering human remains from the scene of the fatal Continental plane crash February 12th near Buffalo. The program will air this Saturday, March 21, at 7 a.m. and Sunday, March 22, at 3 p.m. .

The Erie Seawolves are holding tryouts this Saturday, March 21st, for anyone interested in singing the national anthem at this season’s home games. Tryouts will be held at the Erie Playhouse with registration beginning at 11:30 am and tryouts beginning at noon. The Seawolves also will be holding their opening day of ticket sales this Saturday at the Uht from 12 to 4 pm. Wolf. In addition, fans who donate two unopened boxes of cereal to the Erie City Mission will receive a free ticket to opening day, April 8th against Altoona.
