In a surprising about-face, the Erie Zoning Board has approved the construction of the $370 million tires-to-energy plant by a vote to 3 to 2. Erie Renewable Energy plans to build at the site of the former International Paper plant. Here’s a report from YourErie:

I think it’s safe to assume KEEP = stunned. Are you surprised by the ruling? Will the plant actually be built? Maybe we should have built a casino there. Oh, wait.

11-year-old Jordan Brown, accused of shooting his father’s pregnant fiance with a shotgun, will be tried as an adult. He is being held in Erie. Lawrence County Judge David Rishel made the ruling yesterday, and Brown’s attorneys will file a motion to move the case to juvenile court. Until then, Brown is expected to remain in Erie.

Officials in Girard have decided to put the building of a replacement for the Gudgeonville Bridge on hold. They had planned to build a temporary bridge, but are opting to save the insurance money they are receiving and put it towards a full replacement bridge.

Gannon University was part of a select group of American universities recently invited to Iraq by its Prime Minister, Nuri Al-Maliki, to participate in a historical, groundbreaking event in that country’s educational revitalization. The Iraq Education Initiative began in December and is designed to provide full scholarships for up to 10,000 Iraqi students annually, over a five-year period, to study in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, and Germany. According to news reports, the Iraqi government is committing to the initiative $1 billion annually.

John Kanzius is featured in the March edition of the National Cancer Institute Cancer Bulletin. They say:

At his summer home in Sanibel, FL, he used pie pans to create his first RF device. In the garage of his long-time home in Erie, PA, Mr. Kanzius tested the device on America’s favorite ballpark snack. He would eventually use his own money to build a more sophisticated RF generator that Dr. Geller, and later Dr. Curley, went on to use in cancer cell line and animal model studies.

Gannon University President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., has been chosen to participate in a panel discussion that will be held during the 2009 AABHE National Conference on Blacks in Higher Education. The conference will be held March 25-29 in Atlanta. The panel discussion, to include Garibaldi and three other experts in the field of education, is titled “Pipeline Issues for African American Student Access and Student Success.”

Sports

Tonight, Gannon will play in the Division II Elite Eight. The game will be available via a Webcast at http://www.ncaa.com. Both semifinal games on Thursday, March 26 will be broadcasted live on CBS College Sports Network, which is available on the DISH Network and selected DirectTV packages. Good luck!

image003.png The Toronto Raptors today signed Erie BayHawks guard Quincy Douby, making him the 17th call-Up of the 2008-09 NBA Development League Season and the first for the BayHawks in the team’s history. Douby joins fellow former NBA D-Leaguers Nathan Jawai, Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Patrick O’Bryant on the Raptors roster. Douby, a 6-3, joined the BayHakws on March 11 and has played in five games, averaging 18.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 28.6 minutes. He scored in double-figures in all five games, including a season-high 23 points in a 107-98 loss at Albuquerque on March 21.

Edinboro University wheelchair basketball player Andy Garbarino has been named a National Wheelchair Basketball Association All-American. The sophomore was named a second team All-American.
